I used salt and water before painting it. You spray water in the shell and sprinkle salt where you want rust. Spray with water again and let it dry to a crust. Then you paint your body color. After that I scrapped all the salt out and painted in the rust color! It's a patina style. There is some Youtube vids on different methods as well!
