Hey everyone,

Is there an article (ARRMA, ARRMA Forum, tech, etc...) out there somewhere that breaks down, or compares the Mega to the BLX? A buddy and I have the Mega's, and have both upgraded to Castle Creations brushless motors.

He went with the 3800kv, while I stuck with the 2400kv. His now hits 37mph (running a 3S), and we're trying to get to the 50mph mark of the BLX, but can't figure out what's different in terms of gearing and ratios. Mine only hits about 20mph with the 3S. That's fine for my desires and driving ability, but we're determined to get his to the 50mph mark.

The 3800kv motor/ESC combo can only handle a 3S by the way, so our only other options are upgrading to the 17T pinion (which has been ordered, but isn't here yet).

Current specs:
Motor: Castle Creations Sidewinder (SW4) Waterproof 1/10 ESC/Motor Combo with 1410 (3800kv) (Part number CSE010-0164-05)
Pinion/Spur: Stock (14T / 91T 48P)
Battery: ZEE, 3S, 5,000 mAh
Suspension: Stock, re-filled shocks with 37.5 wt oil
Tires: Stock

Can ya'll think of anything else we can do to hit the 50mph mark? Have any of you done the brushless upgrade on the Mega and gotten it to 50mph like the BLX?

Any help would be appreciated.

It's the pinion. He should have no problem hitting 50 with that ESC/motor combo but he needs a larger pinion. Good chance he will strip his spur though. Here is my recommend action:

Install BLX front and rear diffs and input gears
Install BLX slipper/spur gear
15t 32p pinion

50 mph all day long with a 3800kv motor

The gear pitch of the Mega series is the main drawback of getting any kind of speed with the car. They change the gear ratio of the diffs but it's close enough that it may as well be the same. Only the teeth are larger so they can handle more abuse before stripping. 48p gearing is ridiculous for a car that weighs that much. Changing over to the 32p gears will give you instant results. Your motor is way too low for 3s running. Usually you want to be in that 3000-4000kv range with the lower kv motors being able to handle a wider range of pinions. Also stick with a 5mm shaft - Arrma went with it in the BLX for a reason. The diffs can wait if they aren't available but they are usually in good supply. The BLX slipper is a headache to find regardless. As soon as one pops up on ebay, snatch it. Make sure to get the aluminum motor mount & casing. The plastic will eventually oval the bearing sockets.

Hey Guys!
First post for me on the forum. I want to start off by saying thanks for all the help you guys provide to everyone. I've been scanning the forums for a while now and figured it's time to jump in and throw my 2 cents in where I can.

I am the buddy to GraniteRob007's original thread he posted above running the 3800kv Castle on the 3S. @bicketybam, if I may throw some follow up questions at ya...

"Install BLX front and rear diffs and input gears / Install BLX slipper/spur gear / 15t 32p pinion" - Will the front and rear BLX diffs drop right into the Mega's stock housing assuming that they're both the same AR320399? Does the BLX motor housing fit the chassis with no problems as well?

When we bought the motor/ESC combos, the techs put a lot of emphasis on not going too high of KV on these trucks as they over stressed the higher torque requirements and heat potentials with higher pinion gears. Now I'm getting a different vibe after reading y'alls replies. I wanted to wait to post until after I got my temp gun. I took the truck for a spin tonight and ran it pretty good and hard both on and off road. After about 20 minutes of moderate to heavy driving, the motor read about 130 degrees. As I read the forums, this is an okay temp to live with, however, I am concerned with up'ing to the 17T/91T or even the 27T/91T on the stock "noob mount" motor housing in order to break that 50mph goal. Experience thoughts? Will it take it? Or just do the pinion swaps followed by test runs temp checks?

So far the stock 91T Spur is holding up pretty well but I'm catching what you are throwing @Megasty. I know it's coming. I did roast the input pinion already so that's been swapped for the HD unit.

These things are addictive but man they're so much fun. The wife is already regretting getting it for me. LOL. Thanks for the feedback.

The only difference between the Mega & BLX chassis is a single screw hole for the center driveshaft bearing holder. Other than that, it's the same part. All of the BLX stuff will fit the Mega chassis. You can even throw in the bearing holder if you can tell where to drill the hole in the chassis for the screw. As for motor temps, 130 is nothing, the upper limit is between 180 & 200, 120-160 is normal. Running in the summer is usually when you deal with temps. Now, my hands give out way b4 my rigs break a sweat. The Mega truck is seriously undergeared with 48p gearing. The only problem with gearing up is the heat & force it generates becomes too much for the spur. The spur can both melt or strip depending on whether it survives long enough w/o the pinion jumping teeth. 32p is definitely the way to go in that regard. 32p gearing is also more efficient for the motor.

I was looking into this the other night. I just purchased a 3s senton. I have some 3800kv motors I could put into a brushed senton for my son.

I opened up the exploded views online and looked for different part numbers. I thought the chassis was the same number. The motor block is different as well as the driveshaft. The dog bones are the same. The diff casing was different but internals were the same. Diff housing was the same.

Just open both up and compare. Now if I can just find a senton used cheap enough I may do a slight conversion.

I'm also hoping to upgrade the spur from the Mega 48p to the BLX one. I plan on buying the BLX motor mount and a new spur assembly. What portion of the spur assembly is needed for this upgrade? Is it only the slipper plate hub set (AR310880)? Or do I need to complete the assembly with parts AR310881 and AR310882? AR310882 (the maintenance set) is backordered everywhere! Thanks for any help!!!

The stock Granite Mega pinion/spur ratio is 5.6

The BLX ratio (57/15) is 3.8

With the Mega 91t spur, you would need a 24t to get the same ratio, but that is not an option, unless you mod the motor mount. Si use the 27t pinion, and your ratio will be 3.3 - a bit higher than the BLX. Watch your temps. If you have the 1410 motor, you will probably be OK. If you have the 1406, it may overheat on you.

Edit - and you have the 2400kv? is that the 1415 motor? If yes, that motor is a torque monster, I'd start gathering the BLX slipper parts now. Then run it with the 20t pinion on the 57t BLX spur.

Buy this NOW! They sell out quick. This is a complete BLX slipper/spur.

Supply & demand is sweet. I bought 2 when they were $14 & it was the last 2 for a while. Now it's $25. It's still much better than buying the individual parts, including the sold out set.

I'm still sitting on my 32p. Haven't picked up a pinion yet. I was waiting on my back ordered adjustable motor mount to show up..... Haven't ran my truck in weeks though cause everywhere here is nothing but mud.

I'm super confused now... Do the Big Rock and Typhon have a different assembly? Looks like they have a different 57T spur than the Senton and Granite.... Is this really the case??

Don't be confused, just get it before they're all gone. Others have made that same mistake. It's just the spur. They redesigned the tabs on the BRCC & Typhon spur to hold the plates better, or so it seems. I have both spurs between my Granite, Senton, & Typhon. Neither have had any problems so far.
