I have a new Notorious 6s V6 that I’ve ran once now. How important is it to shim the differentials ?

Theres a strong chance at least one needs shimming. If its not shimmed correctly, diff go boom.
Its a good chance to top off or change the diff oil while in there anyway.

v6/EXB 29mm crown/input has more contact on the spiral mesh, unless it's skipping I'd just wait until your 10-20 pack PM.

It’s pretty important. If you’re going in there you might as well check. Personally I have found the EXB diffs to be a lot stronger with the limited slip plates installed. They’re aggravating as hell but once in they don’t allow as much wiggle inside the cup. I still run 60/500/30. My bashing is hard on diffs. I keep the wheels spinning damn near the whole time it’s on the ground and have a 4’ tall ramp permanently mounted in my backyard. Aluminum gearboxes will save you money in the long run if you drive like I do.

its worth just to check the diff ring and pinion I do it on all my new cars (y)

If its not shimmed, the gears don't mesh well enough. If they don't mesh well, they strip. Might be a ring/pinion gear, might be an internal gear.
Can you also tell if the diffs have too much play by feeling how much it moves side to side?

Should be shimmed OK out of the box, they tend to be pretty tight IME.

Everyone has their own tricks and this one is mine.
I put 1 8x0.2mm shim behind the drive bearing and 1 behind the input gear. Gear mesh is always perfect. This works because I use aluminum gearbox faces so there's no explanation over time. Also doing this eliminates the shim fight when I install my diffs.

I have left my front diff not loose, but not tight as usual just to see what would happen. Had an aluminum i wanted to replace it with. It made it through 6 or 7 packs before it started making noise. Then by the end of that session pinion was toast. IME it's landing with the wheels spinning full chooch. Especially on grippy surfaces, that alone is just brutal on everything.

These words don’t make sense 🤣 what is full chooch? I had an aluminum?

Had an aluminum differential to replace the plastic stock one, had is generally past tense, and if you don't know what full cooch is you must be living under a rock n i wont bother wasting time explaining it to you. I was sharing my personal history on the subject posted by the OP. Sorry if my comment didn't make sense to you but to comment just to poke fun at someone speaks to your character. Personally I don't say anything on-line I wouldn't say to your face. And I certainly wouldn't pull you aside just to say you don't make sense to me. But if it made you feel better bout yourself, cheers mate and have a great day.
