Hi,
I am new to the forum, be gentle :). I have two Granite trucks, love em!!! I just had my first motor failure after using a 2s LiPo for the first time. Yup, moved the jumper, maybe should have let it cool a bit but when I went to power up I had steering with no go. A/B troubleshooting took it to the motor. For now I replaced the stock motor and all is well. The 2s LiPo batteries are a noticeable improvement in everything! Faster, runs longer, jumps better with better balance, yeah!!! Now I get itching for an upgrade.

I am looking at using either the hobby wing or the spectrum esc/motor kits, they run about $104.

Questions:

I have the stock batteries and 2s LiPo batteries. Would I do better with the 3300Kv or the 4000Kv version?

All is stock. Is this the time to get a stronger motor mount plate as well?

Any clear preference between the Spectrum and the Hobbywing products?

Any other "gotta have'em" tips you are willing to share, I am all ears!!!

I really appreciate any thought you folks are willing to share. I am fairly mechanical and seem to have two roll aways full of the wrong tools :). This is great grandson bait!!! We have a lot of fun bashing and crashing!!!

The m2c motor mount has a brace that keeps the the motor from rocking downwards from jumps.

A couple gift cards under the can do the same.

If you're starting to upgrade, I second the 3s blx motor and slipper from Jennys!

You'll eventually need the better diffs too if you're upping the power. You can start off with the plastic ones off Jennys or go right for arrma metal gear ring and pinion for a bullet proof drive train.

Hot racing makes a set too but they're almost twice as much iirc.

I too killed my brushed motor running it on 2s. I switched over the pin like you did as well but after the 2nd run the motor was toast.

I just recently upgraded my granite with a brushed to brushless conversion. JennysRC for sure! I upgraded to the steel spur gear with the slipper clutch as well. Added some HR Diff yokes since the plastic ones just seemed to tight. Had to add an additional shim when I did that. Also added the blx motor mount from JennysRC as well.

Take my word of advice and watch some videos on the slipper clutch. Also don’t be like me and over tighten it and break the slipper hub.

This thing is a different truck going from 2s to 3s

Thanks guys!!!

I had not heard of Jennys, very good tip for sure!
I grabbed ecs/motor/mounts/spur gear, and a couple of wheelie bars, should be great!
I just got out for a chance to run down a new 2S lipo with the stock truck. Even that is much better! Scoots around real nice and jumps seem more controllable.
I will take heed on the slipper adjustment, thanks! For now I will be running the old nickel batteries and 2s lipo. Next time the piggy bank springs a leak it sounds like I will be getting some 3s batteries!!!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was wondering if you guys could clarify. New to the hobby and prepping to upgrade a Typhon V3 Mega when the eventual motor burn out happens.

If I did put in the slipper, I would also need this pinion?

And if I skipped the new slipper, could I just use this pinion?

You want the Max10 SCT combo with the 3660 3200kv motor https://www.amazon.com/38010200-Max10-3660SL-3200kV-Sensorless/dp/B073DCT1X8 the standard Max10 and the 3652 motor are a bit small for a 1/8th scale buggy.

I would go with the spur and the 15t mod 0.8 pinion ditch the 48p gearing it won't hold up to brushless power in a vehicle that size.

Back again. My new BLX esc has 3 flat wires (red, white, black) ending in a small molex type connector, coming out of the black motor lead.

My Mega esc does not. Where do I connect that connector, if at all? I already connected the red, white, black wire set from the switch side of the esc to the receiver.

It looks like my heat sink fan will plug into the heatshrinked connector on the black motor lead.

If you know, I would like to, thanks! :) I sure don't want to turn my truck upgrade into a blue smoke generator.

You get the good price on the new part take outs at Jenny's, but don't look for a lot of extra info :)

I've been through two brushed motors so far in less than a month. And I'm only running the NiMH packs through it.

That is called a JR or Hitec connector. That is meant for the fan on the motor heatsink to plug into.

That is because of 2 things.
1. A 550 brushed motor is barely adequate for a 2wd buggy let alone a 4wd Monster Truck.
2. They use the absolute cheapest motors on the planet in these things.

If you want to keep it brushed your best bet is a Hobbywing WP880 and a 775 motor.

I got my granite together. It must be OK, I didn't break out the window when I hit the front of the house flying through the air, and later I managed to land without having an insurance claim on my neighbor's car. This is on 2s LIPo!
I ended up with the blx drivetrain with 2s battery. I tweaked the ESC setting a bit, lowered the front of the truck a tad, added much need lube to the front and rear differentials and loosened the slipper clutch just a bit from how it was from factory, about 3/4 turns out.
Crazy fun!!! It seems to be better all the way around so far.
