I really wish I understood half of what was being said here. No idea what a liquid mask is, YT to the rescue I guess. My wife just asked me about getting an airbrush, I guess I should say yes. I know I want to paint a body to match my Tacoma parked outside...

Taping works ok for simple designs along with masks …but for the really complex and hard to reach areas it’s just not possible ..not to mention that tape bleeds a lot so the result isn’t always as clean as hoped …

I don’t think you could do these with taping simply because you’d never be able to get tape on the inside of these very tight detailed areas

Liquid mask is basically a liquid latex that you shoot on with an airbrush or hvlp gun and it dries leaving you basically with a thin layer of latex on the inside that allows you to very cleanly cut out and pattern or design you want

Here’s what it looks like when dry

Thanks for the explanation. Do you use beater bodies for actual driving and then use the the other bodies for show? So far I'm finding the car getting flipped frequently...

I use all my bodies..but I paint my own so I don’t feel guilty about destroying them. I’ve done hundreds of bodies for people and from what I’ve heard from them is that probably 90% of the ones I’ve done for them become shelf queen bodies..most people seem to run basher bodies and then a nice one for the shelf 😎

That engine is awsome!! That truck is awesome. Just like the rack in the background. Feel free to post a lot more. (y)

Got 5 different cheap airbrushes. Should have gotten a decent on right away. Two are a bit better but not so happy. Just a lot of time inbetween with fiddling to get them to spray properly again. Ordered a Harder & Steenback Infinity today with 0,4mm and 0,6mm nozzle. Hope it's worth the money. Interesting thought: Buying one or two clear bodies less pays for the more expensive airbrush.

cheap airbrushes
I don't buy cheap when it comes to tools, especially paint tools. Get good stuff and you won't be holding yourself back with junk. My Sata spray guns were over $800 a piece when I painted cars and I had 6 or 7 of them.

Let me add my $.02 here

I’ve been airbrushing rc bodies for a few years and to be honest I’ve done probably 1000+ bodies

I’ve learned a LOT along the way ..I ripped through so many cheap compressors along the way ..the most important thing to have is a good compressor. And then a great airbrush..without those 2 things your results will not be great.

I’ve been using a paasche compressor for the past couple years and it’s been amazing ..it’s a 300$ compressor and I just can’t say enough about it..I’ve easily got 1000 hrs on this compressor and it’s still going strong

The next thing I would recommend is a decent airbrush like an Iwata eclipse for details and a patriot 105 fir everything else

It’s all a learning curve but if you take the advice from people that have been through it you’ll get to the better end results faster

Just my $.02
I've been wanting to try an HVLP gun to dip some RC bodies. I'll just paint it on the inside and in reverse order. Can you make a suggestion for an appropriate HVLP gun? I'm guessing I can skip the clear as it has a layer of Lexan doing that already. Know of anybody that's tried this? TIA

I finally got to use the Steenbeck Infinity Airbrush using a 0,6mm needle. What a difference to the cheaper airbrushes! And so easy to clean when having used too thick paint. Open nose, wipe needle and good to go. Before I had to take the whole cheap airbrushes apart sometimes during painting.
