Allow me to explain the premise for my latest build… spend a bunch of money on another car I definitely don’t need.

Around Christmas time I stumbled upon what I thought at the time to be a pretty decent deal (not so much anymore with all of the Arrma/Horizon sales) Used Outcast 8s roller, no motor, receiver or esc but it did include the stock Spektrum servo.

After little thought I haggled them down to $500 bucks shipped to my door (again in hindsight I’m an idiot, I know) and waited anxiously. At this point I was busy building my 8s Kraton exb and hybrid 1/7ish Outcast thing so I didn’t really have any intentions of buying, let alone building a 1/5 Outcast but I knew my brother was interested in getting into the 1/5 scale game so I bought it with the plan of selling it to him. (Subconsciously already building it in my head) It showed up in an EXB box and appeared to be used but taken care of. I’m kind of thinking the previous owner bought it, had some fun and then bought an EXB and swapped the electronics over to it before selling the carcass to me.

Long story short, it showed up, he didn’t want it (Yes!) and now with all of the sales and it being worth less than what I paid for it, I pretty much have to build it. I feel like I spent a good chunk of change on my last two builds to make them fairly bullet proof, and decided I wanted to do this one as cheap as possible and try to weed out as many upgrades as possible for my style of bashing, but still upgrade it to an extent. The truck is short a motor, transmitter/receiver and an ESC so rather than replace with factory parts I decided to upgrade those right off that bat. And because they were available at the time and I don’t like to follow rules too closely, I grabbed a Raminator servo to replace the stock Spektrum servo that came with the truck.

Trying to do this a little cheaper, and wanting to try something different than the 1100kv I have in my EXBK8S, I picked up a Surpass Hobby 980kv. It was right around $100 bucks so definitely not breaking the bank. Physically smaller than I expected but I hope it’s a good little can of beans.

On with the rest of it.

I knew I wanted a Max5 for this build (cheaper/different than the xlx2 I have in my Kraton) and I somehow stumbled across a member here selling a new one for 150 bones shipped. Jumped on that:

QS8 the world! Got the series harness from radiocontrolpower.com for like 10 dollars. Can’t complain about that and they are just awesome to deal with. I needed some fan covers for my other builds, ordered 4, they sent 8. Seems no matter what I order they always throw a little something extra in to show they appreciate my business. Last time it was more zip ties than I could use in a lifetime.

Picked up the Arrma receiver/servo tray to fit a 1/5 scale servo.

And a dumbo receiver to pair with my x6 or whatever it is.

Gearing will be 30/39, got the 30t from saga, the 39 came from my Kraton. I originally ordered the 30 for the Kraton, so I’m not going to say it was a purchase for this truck, more just a spare parts deal. I’ll also be taking the motor mount slide from my Kraton and using on this, so again I’m calling that a freebie! I think I’m ready to tear it apart and start building at this point.

Well I tore apart and reassembled the Kraton to steal the motor slide and gearing for this build so progress moves on!

Things are starting to look a little dirtier than I originally saw but… the can of beans fits, and clears the steering rack, so no forced upgrades there.

Started to pick the bones of the stock receiver box and found the original owner decided to keep one of the screws… hey that’s ok I’ve got replacements.

Oh… he also decided to keep the little felt/foam wire chase covers too… ok I guess I wasn’t planning on running in wet conditions I can live with that.

Hey how you doing Raminator servo…

Oh the original owner also decided to keep these… I guess they aren’t really needed???

Oh and kept this too

And finally… the final piece that is really aggravating me…

I’m about as far as I can go with getting the servo mounted at this point. I will have to do some research and decide if I should upgrade things on my K8sexB so I can steal from it for this build or if I should just go back with stock parts and leave my Kraton alone.

Still can’t get the last post to edit and look right, but oh well, moving on.

I decided to go ahead and check out the center diff while I’m putting it together. It still felt really tight so it was more a peace of mind thing. Plus I’ve got earplugs.

Everything looked good, so I cleaned it all up and reassembled with approximately 2 1/4 ear plugs. After a few runs I will disassemble and see if I need to add more.

I got the 39t spur installed and went to reinstall the motor mount/center diff conglomeration back in the truck when one of my motor mount bolts went all righty loosey…

Not having any easy outs, a less stubborn man would put it off for another day but oh no, not I. After a few drill bits, I was able to screw another screw in behind it and push it up so it was maybe protruding a 1/16” of an inch. Little Dremel work to make a slot for a screw driver and to my delight, it came out!

That’s all my progress for tonight. I got excited last night and ordered a hot racing servo saver for my K8sexB and then this morning I remembered Jenny’s and realized I could have saved a few bucks and gotten some other spares at the same time but oh well. The Kraton needs some love.

Well the rest of the little parts and pieces I needed have arrived!

First up, I got the motor and mount all reinstalled in the truck and ready for fun times.

No I’m not going crazy cleaning everything trying to make it look perfect and new. When I get bored next winter, I will probably tear it all back apart and really try to clean it up.

After careful consideration I decided not to tear apart my K8sexB for the servo saver and just put the new Hot Racing one on this project. I know breaking my own rules, but oh well. To mount the esc, I just drilled three holes in the esc/servo box cover and screwed it down.

And my most daunting task so far today… soldering the battery connectors onto the esc. I’ve done quite a few of my batteries but never an esc so I was a little nervous. I think it turned out fairly well, but time will tell.

She’s all set up and ready to run. I ran across all the screws and added some loctite to the grub screws on the wheel hexes. The hoovo 9200mah batteries are a tight fit but they squeezed in there. The alignment of the rear wheels seems off compared to my Kraton 8sexB but everything is bolted in the same holes?

So far I have to say, I love it. Tons of power, slides around great. It’s maybe 70 degrees out today, but I wasn’t nice to it and temps didn’t get out of hand at all. There was a few times I cart wheeled it for a good 15 feet and was expecting something broken and it just kept going. I think the 980kv motor is really under appreciated. The max5 provides plenty of power without all the fancy stuff the xlx2 has but isn’t really needed in a basher. Three thumbs up at the moment. I stole the body from my 1/7 Outcast build for the day, cause I hate red, and the body I got with the truck hasn’t been reinforced yet. Hopefully I can get some decent weather tomorrow and pull the ramp out and really abuse it.

Got a real good day bashing in with it. Sent it pretty hard a few times and probably got 15’ of height and 35-40’ of distance. Unfortunately for me the rear links pushed in and I broke a front lower shock mount as well as slightly bent the shock shaft.

The link ends I’m going to try and Teflon tape trick on and probably just order a set of EXBs from Jenny’s. The shock I may throw a new end on and see if I can get a little more life out of it until m2c has another sale and I can pick up a set of the 7mm shaft kits. Still super impressed with it. I tore a tire on my Kraton so I ordered a set of trenchers that will probably be swapped between this truck and that one. The front bumper spring has been broken since I got it, so I went ahead and ordered a replacement from @3d-rc.myshopify.com

Very nice project! That 8S outcast red body looks so good I love that I’d get one just because of that haha 😂

Thanks brother!

If shipping didn’t suck, I’d send it to you. Reds just not my color. I can appreciate how it looks but just not my thing.

Well I wrecked the Hoovo batteries I was using for this build so I’m probably going to pick up a set of power hobby hard case batteries to replace them. I took advantage of the m2c 4th of July sale and have a few goodies coming for it however. I also trimmed the Trenchers to fit the Arrma hub and mounted them up to see how they look.

I have pretty good luck with my 4 Powerhobby 4s 8000mah 100C.

It would appear at least 2, very possibly 3 of the stock shock shafts are bent.

I actually broke two of the bottom eyelets as well (one I had replaced already)

Working on some upgrades and should have the new Powerhobby batteries today!

Got three of the four rebuilt with the m2c 7mm shaft kit, 30wt for the front shocks, 35wt for the rear.

When I rebuilt the shocks on my Kraton 8sexB I couldn’t get one of the shocks to not suck the bladder in, so I swapped bladders with one from this truck, put both shocks back together and they worked fine. Now I don’t know if I’m having trouble with the same bladder again or I’m just messing something up but again, can’t get the shock to work without sucking in the bladder, I guess I will let it sit for a little while and try again.

New batteries came! I ordered the 100c 14.8v ones but for some reason they sent 120c 15.2v, and a nice lipo bag that I wasn’t expecting. I think I recall this happening to @Armarookie43 but can’t remember the reasoning.

Make sure your ESC is compatible with HV.

Powerhobby labeling has been bad recently so check and make sure if it’s HV.

Did a little looking and it seems as long as I don’t try to hv charge them, they will be fine. Not sure why Powerhobby is sending people the wrong batteries but oh well.

Beings my k8 sexB is currently down because of the xlx2 fire, I swapped bladders and caps with one of the shocks and got my last shock rebuilt. I put the faulty bladder/cap onto my Kraton shock and it still wants to suck the bladder in so I will just order a replacement and swap it on.

I noticed doing the shock swap that my wheelie bar was bent and had a @Megasty unbreakable wheelie bar/wing mount laying around so I threw that on.

I ordered the 7000MAH batteries and they sent me the 8000mah instead. I'm not complaining since the 8000mah ones are more expensive. But they also sent me the HV ones too instead, but I just charge them as regular voltage lipos since the XLX2 that use specifically says that you cannot use HV batteries. Just check your voltage on each cell after running your rig. These batteries are very good. The only time I messed them up was when I ran them below 3V in one of the cells. After learning that lesson, they have been very good. Powerhobby replaced that battery, but they sent me the 7000MAH instead since that's what came out as what I bought originally. So they sent me another 8000mah for like half the price since I explained to them the discrepancy. So now I have a set of 7000MAH 120C HV batteries and a set of 8000mah 120C HV graphene power hobby batteries. I know. Confusing.
