That is why you can't put enough emphasis on a good local hobby shop. Or doing research on a great forum like this ???

I didn't find forums until the 3rd or 4th year into the hobby... and my hobbyshop was an outright crook. I didn't buy anything online at the time (20 years ago), so that place was my only source of information and things to buy.

Was the dark days of the hobby for me... lol! But I persevered!
 
I find that the local hobby shop to me which is still 30 miles or so is often just trying to sell things and enjoys the damage or inexperience we have at times.
Although I have made a friend the last 6 months or so with a tech that works there I always ask for him and try to learn what he can teach.
The wife and I both learned to be wary of anyone trying to push a particular brand too hard.
We both are fond if the Arrmas as they take our inexperience well.
