Can I just get a splinter and plug a extra cooling fan into the esc where the stock esc fan is plugged into? Or is it better to plug it into the receiver?

That's what I did on 3 of my trucks. Splitter on the esc fan plug. On my outcast with stock esc, stampede with HW Max10 sct esc and my eJato with traxxas vxl-3S esc. I don't believe the fan plug is isolated from the BEC for the receiver, so the power you get from plugging directly into the esc/fan port would end up being the same power from the receiver. Unless you run an external BEC to power your receiver/servo.
