Yeah notchy sounds more like what I’m describing. I’ve bought Vitavon cups and planetary gears so I want them nice and tight so hopefully the back of the sun gear won’t shear off.

Vitavon diff cases are narrower than stock. I had to run 2 narrow shims under the sun gear on one side instead of the stock narrow and wide to keep them from binding. This trick only works with open diffs.
They are never perfectly round. If you shim them slightly on the tight side they with "grab" at least one place in a full rotation. I'm happy to build mine this way. I get them hot by running them in a drill and it usually beds them in nicely. Never had any issues doing it this way.
I found that using the diff plates two round and 1 star on one side and just two round on the other is the only way to get them to fit. I wanted to use the plates to add support to the sun gear. It seems all aftermarket aluminum diff cups are a little different. The notchy feeling is better after working them in.
From what you guys say that’s part of the process, I’m on the way to a bullet proof diff
