How do you know when or if you should shim your diff ?

Open it up and have a look at the mesh of the input gear relative to the main gear. There should just be a tick of backlash at all positions of teh main gear while turning by hand. Can be done by feel and hearing a tick at the gear mesh. Apply a shim as needed. Stop and back off a shim if too snug and no tick is heard. Best way to describe it.
