Welcome to the latest edition of “I shouldn’t have bought this”

About a year ago I decided I didn’t really like having an on road car, so I figured I would make my stretched typhon into a dual motor rig to try and get me into it a little more. At the same time a lot of street Mojave set ups were popping up, so I figured if one on road car was boring, maybe two would be awesome? Plus I had the stock chassis left over from my Fireteam and a bunch of spares so on road Mojave it is. Still needed some parts so I grabbed what I thought was a good deal (it wasn’t): an Infraction slider from eBay. The price didn’t seem too terrible, and it looked good in the pictures (Note: I do all my internet on my iPhone, so tiny pictures) Anyways, it showed up, looks like it’s a v1, has definitely been “enjoyed” but oh well. It’s mine now and as long as the diffs are fine I won’t complain.

My original plan was to just use the diffs and suspension on my Fireteam chassis. So I started throwing parts together and got most of a roller together. I switched out the hubs for Kraton hubs to add some width, and have it on the 53/107 Hoons. Love the look, excited about it and then as one does, I got busy and didn’t get to finish it.

Then I sold my stretched Typhon that was originally going to get the dual motor set up, and just kind of forgot about this one for a few months . Recently @StephenSchandelmayer shared his Mojave gt build and it reignited some excitement in me to get this one done. So after a lot of thinking and contemplating buying a carbon fiber chassis, I switched everything back to the original V1 Infraction chassis and stuck on the dual motor mount.

I think the body actually fits a little better wheelbase wise on the Infraction chassis. I originally wanted to stick with the Fireteam/Mojave chassis and just make side skirts to mount the batteries on, but I really wanted to run the rear splitter without having to reinvent the wheel. And if I ever get more serious with it, I’d like to switch to a Perfect Pass carbon fiber chassis.

I’m going to lay it out pretty similar to how Raz did his dual stock motor/esc Limitless. I need to either buy or make some side skirts. I’d really like to get the body mounted up next and then go to the side skirts. With the Kraton hubs the 53/107 Hoons fill out the front fender wells pretty well. I may add some spacers in the rear to get them out a little further, but I really need to mount the body before I worry too much about it.

Like most of my projects, I’m sure it will be long and drawn out, but I wanted to share. And shout out to @StephenSchandelmayer for the inspiration to get back on this project.

You are crazy.

How will you protect the body from rubbing on the ground?

It should come up a bit when I get it mounted. I would like to keep it as low as possible though, so I will probably end up trimming off some of the sides.

I had some time to mess around tonight and I’ve got the body mounts figured out. Was a bit skeptical about how I would make these work and look good, but I got lucky and was able to use a combination of factory infraction and Mojave body mounts.

I need to make a piece to bridge from the front infraction mount to the front Mojave mount, but that will be another day.

Pretty excited with how it is going. If I can lift the front ride height just a touch, I don’t think I’ll need to do any body trimming and it will still look nice and slammed. Really love how the body mounts worked and it fits on there so nice and snug.

Not sure this build is really going to make me fall in love with street bashing, but man it is cool to look at.

Progress!

I got the side skirts rough cut. I need to take them off and sand the edges down nice, but they fit pretty good. Can’t believe how easy carbon fiber cuts.

Then I messed around a bit with placement and got the esc’s mounted. I mounted them sideways so they would sit flat on the chassis without having to cut off the factory ears.

While I was at it, I threw in the center diff and driveshafts and plugged a few batteries in to see if it works. The receiver box is just sitting there temporarily until I get the side skirts done.

I’m getting close and pretty excited about tearing up the street. I think I just need to order a set of batteries and a longer cable to get the esc’s into the receiver box.

I’m hopeful to get it on the pavement by the middle of the month, but I know most of my builds are slow, and there is a bunch of little stuff to do, but summer is running out, so I better hurry.

Don't forget you can seal the edges of that carbon with ca after your done sanding them 😎

Looks awesome man! That things gonna be a riot!

Looking good dude!! I love carbon. So fun to make stuff with. You must be up north... You better hurry because summer is running out meanwhile I'm praying for summer to run out🤣

Yep, I’m up in southern Minnesota. I shouldn’t complain about winter because last year we had virtually no snow, but man I still hate it.

It’s on the to do list, brother.

If you don't mind me asking... what do you use to cut your carbon? I need to find something that can make small curves 🤔

Got the side skirts sanded down, edges glued and mounted into place. I also installed the cut down receiver box and stuck the factory servo back in and got it centered.

Definitely not perfect, or as clean as @StephenSchandelmayer ’s build, but I’m trying not to blow a ton of cash and end up not liking the on road stuff. It’s been very tough not going hog wild like my other builds. If I end up liking it, I’ll probably end up redoing most of it with new parts.

I ordered a longer cable to get the esc wires into the receiver box. And a set of Ovonic batteries. Really I should be able to be out within the next week trying to break something.

I think it's beautiful. I think the dual spektrum stuff actually looks pretty awesome
