I just opened a large LiPo safe I haven’t been into in about three months. Probably has 16 or 18 storage-charged LiPo’s in it. I opened that baby up and got a big whiff of that strange, sweet smell that we all both love and dread in equal measure. After inspection, none appear to be puffed or show any visible indications of any kind of failure. My nose isn’t accurate enough to pinpoint which one was off-gassing, they all smell vaguely sweet at this point. What to do? Sigh.
I’ll start with a $10.00 LiPo checker and look for dead cells I guess…. They are all living on the patio for now.

Same here. A whole batch in my one ammo box of the 3 has the that sweet smell of Lithium Polymer. I am sure you can narrow it down. Testing each one with my checker as I did , didn't really narrow it down. I suspected it was one of my 6 3s Yoowoo Graphenes . Yeah that comes from outgassing. I never felt it is normal. Drives me crazy too. But could be ok IDK.???
Technically these cells are hermetically sealed as they always should be IMHO.
I've purchased NIB lipos that smelled really strong once unwrapped and the vendor replaced them No issue. So maybe it should not outgas at all???

Plug packs into charger just to check cells..bad pack should have cells way off..I'd buy a 80$ 8a discharger instead of lipo tester...best 80$ I've ever spent..it'll discharge a reg 4s 8000mah pack to storage in 30 mins or a 4s2p 8600mah srd v2 to storage in 45 mins..it'll save your packs in the long run an pay for its self quik...most all the 2p performance packs need to stay at storage 3.80v/cell when not in use or cells go outa wack...I charge um,run um an bring them back down to storage asap...pack longevity on the performance packs is key to good #'s

I am curious as to why the lipo safe was not venting while closed? Is it sealed? @Dan B.

All methods of storing lipos safely will always have a venting method design. I remove the Seals on my Ammo Cans for this reason.
My Batt-Safe is also vented for the same reason.
Dedicated Dischargers are great. I have 2 of them also. ISDT FD-200 and MR12. Indespensable Lipo tools.
Just I don't believe this is @Dan B. 's issue however.

If the lipo bags have no vent port and just a zipper ,the bag still gets to breath through the zipper. A zipper is not a seal👍 to proove this ,I took a blow gun an blew air right through the zipper and you can feel air from the opposite side

Vented or not, the outgassing smell still emits from the lipo and stagnates within the container. Once opened it is more pronounced. Been there. The outgassing is very slow and minimal. Yet smells more concentrated inside the container whether vented or not.

@K-BASH shouldn't you making a you tube vid 🤔 we want more😁👍

Correct..for example when we fart in our pants the gas smells way worse inside than when it's outside the pants..🤣🤣

Haven't done a vid in almost a month..took a Lil break after a bunch of 160+ vendetta crashs, smoked a sign with new vte2 car..I killed 3 xlx2 last month..waiting on castle to ship me some new ones..but I'm itching for some new crazy speeds..

By all means, check your lipos. My guess they are all fine.
Outgassing or migration through those barriers is normal but only to a certain degree. That might just be your smell, as it's hard to quantify.
'Venting' only helps in case of overpressure, i.e. the smell won't leave on its own unless there is air movement.
It mainly vents through the connection of the electrodes, but some molecules also leak through those plastic linings.

You are doing the right thing, play it safe. I only store my lipos outside, period.

@K-BASH you need to get that 200 on the vendetta 😁👍
That would be something crazy insane..my last 3 hits with it I crashed all 3 times trying to slow it down..only was able to get 1 GPS read on slowest hit an it was 162..my fastest of 3 car turned 2000rpms more than 162 hit..so I know it'll run 170 with stock body..xlx2 an 1721 only pulled 350a on them runs so I'm 100% certain it would run 200mph..but I don't believe car would stay together at that speed..I could be wrong though cause I never ever thought 170 would be possible..we'll give it a try soon as I get escz

They are stored on a large 1/4” steel sheet packed in zippered LiPo bags in my garage. Two big bags, about 6 smaller ones. So yeah, basically vented, those LiPo bags “breath.”

I try to keep my LiPo collection pretty low because of the upkeep is a chore.
I am currently doing power cycles on all of them today. Charge up and discharge at 30 amps down to storage. I try to do this monthly or every other month.

I was told this is best for keeping them healthy.

I’m not that fastidious. I check them every two or three months to make sure they are still showing acceptable storage cell voltages. If I could discharge at 30 amps I might be persuaded to cycle them occasionally. Your discharger must get hot! I have 4 giant MaH 4s bricks that I run in my DBXL-E, and one time I had them charged and ready to bash, but my plans changed. I discharged them to storage voltage and it took most of the day to do it, resetting the charger multiple times because the longest time-cut is 2 hours.
And I totally agree about thinning my LiPo herd. I’m going to be selling some RC’s soon, and I’ll be including batteries with sale. I’ve accumulated a ridiculous amount of batteries.
