Just a quick thread with pics to demonstrate how to open an EXB diff (I.e. assemble so that there are no lsd plates).

Parts required below - I presume if you are converting from an existing diff you only need ARA311094 diff shim set and will recycle other bits from your existing diff.

All parts laid out - basically outers above, inners below

Assembling diff case - I find it easier to get the pin in if I hold down the shims above the o ring with tweezers.

Inners - worth noting the plates behind this small gears have a rough edged and smooth edged side smooth edges face into the diff.

Didn't have any 20k so eyeballed 5050 10k:30k (I know not perfect but it's a basher lol). Letting the bubbles out.

The Eagle eyed amongst you will spot I overfilled a little so I just release the grub screw in the base and bleed the excess as I tighten down the gear.

And all done... buttery smooth, no binding!

Excellent break down. Even though I've done it already, bookmarking this for easy to see assembly next time around.

What is the advantage of open vs. LSD?

cheers,

I like the LSD plates in the center and front, but I find them way too stiff for the rear. It essentially locks the rear diff, or at least that’s the way it felt to me. This leads to drifting out the rear end instead of pushing thru a turn. You end up with a very snappy rear end. Not in the good way 🤣

@Grimbles ... on the ring gear side of your assembly are you missing a shim ???
The one that goes below the pin... 🤔
Nah - it's just the way it looks because of the thick shim, so you can't see the edges of the little shim under the pin. Both of the smaller shims are under there. Thanks though chap :)
Mega zoomed in you can just make it out:

Open at the rear will give you more directional stability. And better Turn IN. Will feel less loose in the rear. And break away less. It personal preference for the most part. I feel easier to drive when the rear diff is full open.

So I've configured my rear diff to be open aswell. After 1 or 2 packs I noticed my rear diff internals wouldn't turn anymore so I opened it up and noticed the following lmao:

Maybe the sungear wasn't sitting properly on the pin all the time? I don't know.. I'm confused wether I should just buy a whole new diff or just the internal gears and replace them.
Thoughts?

Not enough shims between the pin and cup is my guess. The pin was able to jump away from the sun gear.

So should I add a shim at this stage? A 2nd larger or smaller one?View attachment 149425
Yes under that pin. Shove as many as you can get in there and still slide the pin in place. You want zero slop in the drive cup. It should spin only, no lateral movement at all.
