Fury - metal or plastic gears?

we ordered a 2014 Fury that is set to be delivered tomorrow. The reviews I saw said it had metal gears, but I just recently saw another review stating the 2014's had plastic gears.

We will just be running NIMH batteries (this is mainly for my 7 year old). Will the plastic hold up ok with those?

If/when we decide to upgrade, what exactly should I be looking at?

It is perfect with the plastic gears if you run it with NIMH
