General discussions - FAST RC boat

Nice, I didn't know about GPSspeedrun.com, cool site.. I may have to submit my Zonda 112mph run. I see they have a class for stock Cats
If you could find 3 more mph you can take that top spot!
Only catch is that you have top pop the lid and show it's still the stock motors and ESCs

I should be able to get 3mph more if not better.. I can start my run a little further back on the lake than I did before, and I’ll be using stronger batteries next time out so I’ll see.. No problem on showing the electronics, it’s all stock anyway. Hopefully next weekend I’ll get a chance to run

I’m running a set of ABC 1816 props, prepped and balanced by Chris Hoffman (Dasboata).. These are the best speed props Ive seen. I’ve run these on two other boats, each gained between 12 to 15 mph over the stock props.. they’re expensive but we’ll worth it if you want to go fast.
I see also OSE now have there own line of hardened alloy, balanced and sharpened props in matching sets with different sizes available.. Those look pretty nice also

I always have my paddle board as 2 functions:

1. Rescue vehicle for when the boat flips
2. Provides a walk out over the mud.

Yesderday I went about half way up the paddle board and went to launch/toss the boat into the water and the rudder hit the end of the paddle board.
Bummed to say the least. I guess you could say the rudder is sharp LOL

This looks too big to repair so I ordered a replacement:

Had yet another frustrating time at the pond, but I believe I have both boat issues figured out.

1. The Mono just needed more trim tab and made a clean run after this 75 mph blowover.
2. The Rigger might have hit something in the water. Its forward movement stopped dead in its tracks and the rudder was bent badly. Water levels are very low right now so this seems to be the best explanation

Ouch!. Must have been something solid in the water. Have hit fish/turtles before with rudder just bending up, but that's what the breakaway screw is for.

I keep watching the rigger clip in slow-mo and before what you see the big splash the boat comes out of the water and turns to the left (towards the camera)
I am not sure if maybe I turned left and the rigger jumped out of the water first? I hear they will flip if you try to turn left, but this seems extreme. Also seems rather slow to be driving that poorly... I could see at 60+ possibly.

I plan on going tomorrow and paddle around to check the area where this happened for anything shallow in the water.

Some days karma doesn't agree with our plans, I've had my share..
That was a big hit.. It definitely looks like the rigger hit something solid the way it flew up like that. Maybe a big rock on the bottom.. No damage anywhere on the rigger?Sucks about the low water level being so low.. Its the same at one lake where I run, in some areas the water is so low the rudder can just about drag on the rocks at the bottom so I need to be careful. Was all this right after your paddleboard got ripped?

Yeah man, the rigger survived, which is pretty amazing.... Only the bent rudder. I have already installed a new one.
This was 2 days after cutting the paddle board. Amazon 1-day shipping to the rescue with a replacement rescue vehicle.

While I wanted to get the tug boat that many use.... it is hard to beat $89 for an inflatable boat that I can go out and recover the RC boat with. I have always had concerns that pushing the upside-down boat through the water might force water into the hull if the tape fails in one spot. Especially with the Mono where the hatch fitment is pretty bad.

Are speed boat kits still a thing? All I find are RTR. When I was a kid I hade a Robbe Scarab (aka the baywatch boat) and it was fun to build, good looking, and fast (for me, at the time at least)

There are still plenty of wood kits out there:

Many RC boat companies now pre-build them for you and you still have to finish the boat as it comes as a bare hull.

How's wood for durability? That old thing was super thick ABS and did not fear impacts with floating logs etc
Wood is pretty good for durability. Many people line the inside in fiberglass to add some extra strength.
I had done this on my Zip kits rigger which is made of wood.

Wood is light and strong, preferred as you can work it really well, if you are into building your own. Just needs to be sealed.
All pre-fab hulls are for sport boating and would require work for high end applications, like blue-printing.

Decided to make an aerodynamic update to the nose of the mono.
The nose will now slant down helping to balance the front lift.

Work in progress: ( #plasticSurgeryNoseJob #shestillpretty)
