What charger and batteries?
It sounds as if the batteries have been discharged to much.
Lipo batteries should never be discharged below 3.3 volts per cell.
I try not to discharge my batteries below 3.6 volts per cell. They last a lot longer that way.

How do you tell when I'm running the truck

Guess I could get better controller any ideas on a decent one that don't break the bank

The esc has a safety cut out. You could also put in a Lipo alarm buzzer

The buzzer stays connected while running the truck
