I've noticed it on cars with slippers too.

Ok, I have no experience with those at all. I have but a lone Infraction to draw my experience/conclusions from which, I realize, will provide an incomplete picture.

Mesh is too loose unless you just got unlucky with an extra oblong gear/s.

You want them just far enough apart that you can feel the "click" all the way around when you rock them back and forth, but no more than that.

When setting your mesh make sure to check it in multiple places not just one spot, as others have said the spur gears are never really round..!!
So rotate the spur before the final tighten down..
