Wow I mean wow! Even with a slightly loose new slipper, the power Thing has now is fantastic and I love the metal drivetrain sound. It’s…smother sounding and almost quieter then stock. I like it. Got a hot racing metal spur and aluminum pads going in old Yeller next.

After this I’ll finish up the the conversion to full 4s rigs for both thing and old Yeller. It’ll take awhile but I think worth it.

Man… I had trouble putting this metal diff together. First time together it wouldn’t spin. So I took it apart, drained it and realized I’d forgotten one of the shims on top of the o-ring. I put it back together with new oil and it spun, then clicked and stopped.

So I took it apart again and drained the oil. After a while I figured out that little tiny bearing between the output drives had fallen apart. Yup, I’m using internals from a used diff. I pulled it out, replaced it and put it back together. It spun nicely so I put the bearings on, installed it in the hot racing yolk, put the axles on then spun it one more time… click click then it jammed. At this point I looked closely at the little tiny bearing I’d pulled out and realized I didn’t get all of it. Like all the little stupid balls part of it.

So I pulled the differential apart, drained all of the new oil, completely cleaned everything and inspected it closely. I got it back together with new oil and it’s perfect now. I just finished putting back together the Vorteks Thing and can’t wait to test it tomorrow. Metal spur, CVDs and metal differential. Now I can finish fixing the Noto so I can finally open the new Kraton😃

You should play the lottery brother! I've never seen that bearing blown before! 😱😱😱

I got rubber sealed bearings on everything in my Granite. I have the ARRMA metal ring and input but I don't have the HR yokes tho.
Yeah but that teeny tiny bearing snugged between the outdrive gears inside the differential…that is metal shielded and the one I had issues with.

So I threw the power hobby raptors on the Vorteks. Hate ‘em. Turned Thing into a goofball of a car. So I took them off and put badlands back on. Wow! This car is unreal the amount of power it has 😀

Surpass 3665, 3050 kv.
Spectrum 130amp esc.
Arrma metal diff, spur and cvds on the rear.
6s mojave front shocks all the way around
Granite front shock tower
Badlands 2.8
S652 servo

Gotta love the hybrid vorteks Thing!

Thing needs a new body. In my mind I want to do an extremely fire red almost metallic thing. Nothing fancy, for the first time I want to try clear windows so I’ll concentrate on that.

I bought several cans of Dura Trax paint at the Hobby shop a while back for this. My favorite is Tamyia and I’ve used Spaz sticks as well with decent results but figured I’d try this.

I shook it up, make sure to heat and hot water. Cleared nozzle good and proceeded spraying the first very light coat. On the fifth pass ‘sputter spur’. No point trying to make this happen the way I was thinking now. It’s freaking fluorescent pink, not fire red like it supposed to be, anyway 😑 time the switch gears.

In my ‘just a little bit left’ cans I have some Tamyia red, gloss black and silver. What to do what to do…Got it. I’ll be back in awhile. And yes, I’m gonna totally ignore the rules of mixing paint brands and waiting longer between coats.

OK at least I got the pink toned down. The whole point of doing a new body for Thing is to get away from the stupid pink stock body. I got an idea what to do next. I think it’ll end up actually looking good. Maybe. The cool thing about meeting my own expectations is that my expectations are easily adjusted.

I have no idea if this will work, the picture in my head says it will but reality will probably set in. It doesn’t really matter, it’s going to get the hell beat out of it. Y’all see how I treat the vorteks…

😊 yeah I like it. Windows turned out well I think. Can’t wait to pull the plastic off but it needs to cure for a few days, then shoo goo and finally the plastic pull. Lastly I’ll install the roof skids and wing. Meanwhile my wife and I are working on cricut stickers for headlights, grill etc.

Looks great, looking forward to the final stages. (y)
This is the example I was thinking of in that post. In my brilliance I put the paint can that was already close to 90° In an even hotter cup of hot water. That’s where the spluttering came from I’m sure because when I stop doing that so did the sputtering.

You know…the rocket style fans I have on my motors are rated for 7.2 V or so. Since I know how to solder I went through my spare parts, misc lipos and came up with this. Tiny light weight 1000 MAH 2S batteries directly ahooked up to the motor fan. I did this on Thing as well as Old Yeller. Motor temps are the worst with these cars but ESC hovers around 135f, so if I can control the motor temps I think I’m good. I love my little soldering station and this iron that I got is absolutely fantastic. Can’t believe it was only 39 bucks.

It is ready to be shoo gooed! The low sporty Vorteks body doesn’t take as much of a beating in the cab area as compared to a Granite or big rock but I still want it to last. Since this car is one that I drive pretty much the hardest I need to do as good a job as possible.

I masked off the windows first so let’s see if this works…

Oops. Yeah, don’t leave a newly shoo gooed body in the Texas 102f sun. I actually like how the concrete fiber tape bled into the paint but still…it was a bad idea.

The tinted windows turned out great though. The paint job as well, sputter and over heating aside. It’s a bash body so perfection is the last thing on my mind. Just need to install the wing and skids then it will be ready to beat on 🙃

I’m happy with it. The color blend turned out like I wanted (I need to experiment more with shading, time for an airbrush) and the tinted windows turned out nice. Figured the barbecue at the park was an appropriate photo stage considering how bad I cooked it after shoo gooing it. That’s the only thing I’m actually irritated about. I think I might’ve weekend that shoo goo adherence to the plastic by leaving it out in the sun like that 🙄 Whatever, I beat the hell out of Thing so…yeah. This is the only time that it’ll be shiny and new. All I need now are a couple Arrma Forum stickers for the side.
