Documenting my slow conversion of a stock Silver V2 Infraction.


First upgrade;
GRP S7 slicks and skid plates. Links are at the bottom.
Skid plates are a must have in my area. GRP S7 here in FL, asphalt ambient is ~ 110F in the morning. I'll go to S5 during winter time.
Main goal is bashing.

Suggest to get the J-style (hard rim)
Next on the list, the stock motor fan died on me.
Upgraded to my new 'go-to' fan as it fits in the 35mm envelope that seems to be so popular and brings along many limitations.
My stock fans, on stock gearing worked just fine for standard bashing.

My selection doubles the CFM on the standard 7V BEC voltage and easily triple/quadruples on the rated 12V. Going forward, planning on placing 2 of them in series and connecting them to the battery leads (24V aka 6S)

Re-utilized the standard dust/debris cover on the ESC, all you need is longer screws.


Note that the standard cover does not reach the bottom, only used as a screen.

You only need to connect 2 wires (+ $ -) , I trimmed the other 2 for RPM control. this ensure they will run on highest possible speed.
More on the fans, I've added nut and spacers both on top and bottom for the motor fan. ESC seems ok even on 12V.
Motor fan required standoffs on the bottom to ensure air flow, else the fan will fight itself. Short standoff on top (nuts) just to ensure that my filter will nt get sucked in. In addition, I already had 1 leave blocking the major surface and standoffs ensure side intake as well in those conditions. This comes in handy during fall :ROFLMAO:

I bought some fan guards/filters from Amazon recently to help keep my 40mm fans clean. Haven’t gave them a proper bash yet to give any type of endorsement yet, so take it with a grain of salt.

Bashing on a 19T pinion today. With my updated fans running on standard BEC voltage, motor reached ~ 165F opposite side of the heatsink, it was ~ 145F under the fan. Top speed 75mph.

ESC temp is a little strange, over telemetry I was getting a reading of 97C which is ~ 205F, should have gone into thermal shutdown if it's true.
External temperature reading it was in the 150F range, telemetry was still at 81C (177F) at that time. These fans cool stuff down very quickly, this was probably 20s between the high reading and low reading.
Ambient 92F, asphalt was at 112F. Tires 150F (GRP S7), managed to wear out my first set today.

Next step completed. I wired up the 12V fans in series and wired them directly to the battery connector. I'm still running with an adapter for now and I wired into that. Now I get the fans running at full speed and I will see what that does to my temps.



After a short cool-down from 97C to 92C (telemetry). This is way too hot to be true (I hope).

My solution $13ea ($26) and you have to solder on connectors. You can re-use existing dust covers from stock or make your own.

Gamechanger fans does come with covers and are painted. Price per?? If the ebay price of $50 is for a set of 3 I'm in as well, I believe it's price per fan incl. covers. They have 3S balance leads on them, if you are running 3S packs that will work out nicely. I run 6S and wpuld have to change connections.

Can I interject, I got a pack of Delta FFB0412SHN's that I run on 3S power and they don't spin up nearly as fast as an NTF fan. They're still good fans, but they're not the same. You can also see the difference between these and an NTF fan in the molding of the plastic cases. Still worth the $$ in my opinion!
 
Yes no problem, I got the Delta/NTF fan info from another thread but never tried them myself.
Spin-up is really a non-issue as we always run these at full speed but good to know.
At the end of the day, only thing that matters is CFM value and static pressure. There is an upper limit for actual return as well. There is only so much heat that can be drawn away.
I always eyeball the installation or better I go by ear. If a fan is mounted close to the cooling surface it will spin faster due to backpressure and will not deliver the air needed for cooling. Keep that in mind, a lot of folks mount them as close as possible and they easily loose 50% of cooling power. There should be no audible change in the fan when mounted correctly. You could go all nerd on it and use an audio analyzer on the phone, never tried it but might be another sideproject.

Good info for mounting! Btw when I meant "spin up" I meant max. RPM; I should have clarified that.
 
Another update comparing stock with high cfm and temperatures.

Temps are identical under load (~ 3 min bashing, both on stock pinion). We were both at ~ 170F on the 'FET' temp. My cfm is easily 4x of the stock fan.
Only and important difference, my cooldown was significantly faster compared to stock.
 
Comparison today between my fan solution and Gamechanger fan.
Ambient ~ 90F (asphalt)
Reported ESC temp"
Sanyo 36mm w/standoff = 146F
Gamechanger flush mount = 154F
very similar driving at that time.

Lesson learned on high cfm fans, you MUST have standoffs or you are choking it.
I'm pretty sure they will 'beat' my fan once they are mounted properly but that will be a future update. Always a question on how much is truly needed though.
 
1) Installed Firma 160, 8S compatible, for a future 8S trial run. Not planning on upgrading the motor just yet, lets see how the stock motor will hold up.
Oddly enough, it requires no modification and the ESC fits in the same place as the 150 version. There are even mounting holes that line up perfectly. Only issue I had was the switch, cable is too short to be mounted like the standard ESC switch, double-sided tape is your friend, only missing ~ 1/2 inch to route it stress free.
I had to build new cables with 6.5mm bullets to plug into the ESC, opposite sider has 4mm barrels for teh stock motor.

2) Added aluminum diff ARA220050

3) Repaired broken pin on rear driveshaft, looks like it snapped off. That's a first for me and no idea when it happened.

Finally finished my Corvette Delta body. Had to re-configure the body posts but originals will work.
Not sure yet if I'll add a wing. Shelf body for now until the original goes out the window.
