Is a wheelie bar necessary for drag racing??

Yes, a hardcore Drag RC will always have a wheelie bar.
No cons.
Unless you don't know how to dial in the Wheelie Bar.
It is not plug and play. You don't just slap it on.
There is a way to tweak/tune a True Drag Wheelie bar. Videos in regards.... It counters any Torque steer and keeps the wheels planted evenly under load.
Not doing this will hurt you. Tuning them precisely matters. Or it will actually work against you. It is not for show or bling.

Best way in my opinion would be to record your car launching in the first 15 feet of the run and run a video in slow-mo to watch what is doing to make those adjustments. Or just make adjustments and see what nets the lowest time 
As @SrC mentioned it needs to be adjusted to perform at its best, so make sure the one you pick is adjustable. Also along with that is tuning the shocks/springs to allow the perfect amount of travel for the car/setup.
