Kinda hard tell from pictures alone. Clean it out, check the teeth, rebuild, run it and see what it sounds like.

Looks like metal shavings in there to me. Prob need an output gear

Some teeth look worse than others. I'd take it out and check the pinion gear and its bearings.

thank you all for the reply. I think I’m on week 3 or 4 and probably pack 20?

I should replace the bearings. I assume I can just slip it out - no need to take off more parts of the car?

You can just slide the diff out, unscrew the set screw on the input cup and take the pinion out. I think. Benefits of a race truggy derived design

I think the diff will be fine but that was a ton of dirt in there. Make sure the 4 screws that hold it to the chassis are tight. They will slowly back out over time. And if any of them won't tighten because it's stripped, replace the gearbox.

Edit: or do what some of these guys do with stripped screws in plastic and use a piece of zip tie, a longer screw or CA glue.
