Hey all,

Took my Kraton to the beach as usual, 2nd or 3rd trip with it. Brand new Spektrum 5000mah G2 100C batteries, and about 10 mins into bashing in hand the remote to my wife and within 3 secs it's on fire lol.

Anyway, popped the body off as soon as I could and flames coming off of the ESC. I smothered it out with sand and disconnected the battery. The battery looks okay the shrink wrap around it opened a bit from the heat/flame but no other obvious issues. I've got it in a sheet metal lunchbox just out of precaution.

Should I do anything to check the battery? Is it safe in a metal box like attached?

And finally, what should I do for an ESC? It's a basher and I put the faster gearing in which may have been a bad choice for sand and dunes. Any advice is appreciated!

Oof, tall gearing and the dunes is probably what did it.

I would hesitate on using that battery as well.

Can always upgrade to a Max6 very popular among the 6s line. 👍

Yeah it had made it out here two years along with my mojave 6s, but I literally got these batteries yesterday or the day prior, so they are as fresh as they're going to be I wonder if it just ended up being too much sauce with all elements combined.

Is the Max6 ESC basically plug and play? I need to sort some stuff out - the fire took with it the power button wire and I think steering servo wiring.

Do you have pictures of the battery? Tall gearing and salt water are a recipe for fire sorry to hear about your fire. Max 6 is the way to go and should handle the gearing no problem.
I can get pics - they're in the garage in the metal box. Fortunately no salt water for about 300 ft, so definitely not contact there.

You can mod the stock esc tray or you can order a Max6 specific tray from multiple sources. It comes with its own power button so you are good there. You could try and repair the servo wires but it may have shorted out when the shielding melted. The stock servo is rather anemic and if you have the money might be a good time to upgrade.

I believe I upgraded the serve in one or both my mojave and kraton. I will have to check. I am not opposed to repairing the wiring, I am capable of that I would just need to find pigtails or if its the stock servo I'll have to replace it.

I would not trust the lunch box to stop or slow down a lipo fire. The lipo would burn right threw in no time, and get so hot any near or touching will catch 🔥.
Pick up a 50 caliber amo box. Esc fire sucks, sorry to hear. Wife driving when it went up in flames she buys🤭😆
Those are the RC rules!!!
It's written in stone somewhere?

It's time to sit the wife down and tell her you have some bad😔news to tell her$

The best part was she got to drive it for about 3 ft before it "stopped" and I was like nah you prob are between reverse/forward, give it a sec, she held forward, "Its not going" I am looking at the NB4 controller and shes like "omg its on fire" lol. She felt bad - it wasn't her fault. I was like "welp, time to buy parts!" She's always OK with it haha.

Sand creates a ton of drag and hard on all components. Main thing is your wife and you are ok and sounds like the rig is as well. I would leave the battery in that metal box and find a wack job protest save the planet event and glue the box to one of their faces.

Ha - I did not see the last part of that post coming. Yeah I will prob try and find a thicker metal ammo can as that's what it seems a lot of people use. A little weird to carry in the trunk but I guess it serves its purpose. The battery itself seems to be fine - there is that almost heatshrink-like plastic wrap around it that opened up prob from the heat of ESC fire like 4" away. The battery itself has not changed shape or puffed or anything. Though, yeah, a bit sketched out by it overall.

Just remember on the ammo cans to remove the rubber seal, or at least that's what the forum says to do to keep it from building pressure if something were to happen.

I like the MAX6 a lot, when they go up they're impressive. I've lit up 3 so far, 1 G1 and 2 G2s.
It is the destiny of every MAX6 to catch on fire while sitting in your truck. I have them in all my trucks and for when the day comes a spare in my junk bin. I highly recommend them, and a fire extinguisher.

Sorry, it's actually 4 I've lit up. I forgot about the one that lit up in the trunk of my car.

So... Do you recommend something else?

Seen you post this a few times. How is your gearing, you think maybe the motor/heat is contributing? Do you know if there were issues with the new G2?

I have had good luck with Hobbywing. OG Max6's keep on going!

Usually pretty conservative gearing, maybe I don't run them as hard   (y)

I think the MAX6/1650kv set up is the most responsive and the best for doing stunts. I do recommend running a quality ESC fan and plugging it in to your receiver. I think most of the MAX6 G2 issues come from its smart cooling system.
