Sand will keep the flames from spreading I guess. But the battery makes its own oxygen as it burns so you can't really put it out until it burns off.

I keep mine in a couple of clay pots. With nothing flammable above them.

Yeah I think they still smoke like a mofo under sand.
 
You might want to check what water alone can do to lithium, very bad idea. By all means check YouTube as most of these suggestions have been tried. Some work but typically not as they were envisioned.
 
What are you guys using to store your lipos? I know many people are using ammo tins but i'm in Canada and well...those are far and few in between, also quite pricey. Any suggestions?
Metal ammo box. For transport I use lipo bag and or ammo box
 
I recently got a Bat-safe and love it. For those that don't know it is filtered and said to help with smoke damage in case of a fire. It looks pretty solid. I have a basic lipo bag for when transporting batteries but mainly keep the batsafe at home for the rest.
