Good day,
I recently destroyed my plastic spur gear. Decided to go with a steel replacement. Got the parts and assembled. Her racing steel spur gear replacement 47T 48p and Traxxas 19T pinion. The Granite seemed very weak. Thought I had installed the spur gear wrong. Adjusted the spur gear again, and now it doesn’t move. Removed the spur gear to find major slipping on the slipper pad. Picture below. I thought I had read that you need to double up the slipper pads. Is that accurate? And if so, how do you adhere them together? Thanks for the help.

P.S. both sides of the spur gear look like that. So both side of the slipper pads worn that way.

Do a YouTube search on that type of clutch set up.

I have been looking for videos of this particular slipper system. Seeing as my Granite is discontinued and about 10 years old, it is hard to find this type of video. Closest was a Traxxas video. But with no new infomation. Will keep looking.

Can you upgrade to a newer slipper?

Not sure. I’m new to this. Picked this Granite up used. Already had to up date ecs and motor. This look more like the Traxxas unit as it sets at the back of the chassis. This is similar to the Fury. Same chassis. Someone with more knowledge than I about this old model is needed. Just looked through 10:pages of results for slipper pad on this forum. Oldest video that I saw was 2021. This appears to be a 2016, at least going by the copyright date on the manual.

If it's a granite you should be able to upgrade to 4s or 3s slipper clutch?

Is this the chassi you have?

Ok, just confirming. I can change this (pics below) to the new style chassis using most of my parts? Seems like I would want to, but don’t need to build one from absolute scratch. So if yes, I’m on it. If not, I will have to figure this out.

This looks a lot like my voltage.

You want to see if the Gorgon parts will fit.

Thanks will look into. I have the manual with all the part numbers. Will have to see what supersedes and what crosses over. Having a discontinued Arrma is not for the weak of Google-fu. Just wish it was easier than doing countless searchs a hundred different ways to find something.

Double checked the parts. Slipper plate seemed to have some residue on it. Will clean and reassemble. May have gotten contaminated without me noticing. Hope that is it. Have more slipper pads coming in tomorrow. Thinking I may need a new spring and nut. Saw a Traxxas video where the guy had a replacement set with slipper plates, spring and nut all together. Seems there are too many washers in my setup. Something else may be at fault. Love used things!

So I cleaned everything and reassembled partially. Watched what was happening. The slipper plates are in contact with the rim of the spur gear. The slipper pads are flush in the spur gear and minimal contact is being made. Looks like I need to double them up. Have new slipper pads coming tomorrow. Will update. Will probably use super glue to mate them together.

Well it’s not the slipper pads or plates. Have to crack open the differential. Started to remove the screws the manual says too. Damm thing won’t pop out. Only had about 15 minutes to work on it today. Hope to have more tomorrow. Will keep this updated.

Took apart the differential. Did not see any damage. Could it be the steel spur gear? It works on the stand, but barely moves once on the ground. Ordered an original plastic spur gear. Will try that and see. Below are the pictures of the diff. Not perfect, but don’t see and rounding or excessive wear. Noise I heard was the grub screw on the pinion. Sounds better now, but still doesn’t drive.

Update: Still no joy. Replaced the spur gear with original plastic gear. Installed new slipper pads. Had to crank it down all the way, and it worked for about 3 minutes. Than the slipper plates lost grip of the slipper plates. Started to smell kinda funky. Removed spur gear. Warm to the touch. Inboard slipper pad is glazed. Pad material is not grippy enough or plates are need replacement. Could they be overly worn? Is the 19T pinion to fast for the truck? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It was running fine on the 13T pinion. I wanted to upgrade to an 18T as shown in the manual. Local hobby shop is mostly Traxxas, so had to settle for a 19T. I’m new to all this and have no experience with slipper plates. Mine are smooth as can be. Is that normal? I wouldn’t know without buying a new set. Learning as much as I can as fast as I can.

Go back to 13th and see what happens. That is a big jump in pinion size.
