How do you tell what is a powerful motor I see lots of people talking about different kv so I'm confused what do you look for to get a powerful motor

From my understanding of brushless motors the higher the kv the faster the motor is and the lower the kv the more torque the motor will have.
Other than that motors from different brands are rated differently as to how many cells/volts they can be ran with. You want a motor that's fast but also can handle the weight of your RC car. Too high of a kv motor with an RC that's heavy will heat up or possibly overheat trying to push the heavy rc around. To low of a kv motor and it will push it around just find but will be slow. Provided gearing between the two is unchanged.

Can anyone else speak to this?

The wattage or amperage output rating is what would tell you how powerful the motor is. A lot of companies don't advertise it, though. But in general, the lower the Kv the higher the amperage rating of the motor.
