If you have the vehicle room, I keep the inner hard cardboard box the rigs come in. I place them in it and stack them or place them side by side so they can ride securely. Works for me.
Metal center diff has been good for the heat and rock so does not eat up the plastic at high speed. Rocks will get caught in there from time to time can make a mess. I like the metal skid plates on how they are made and installed in certain areas which protect the chassis in those low dips, bad roads, or whatever is on the ground for bashing.
