I have a 400x400x3mm 3K CF plate to trim to 245x245mm. I would require a very straight line. I’m not fond of using a disk grinder.

Can it be cut on a shear? If not, what else would work and work properly? Would love to hear from experienced folk who have done this successfully.

TIA✌🏻

My method is to put the plate on top of a thick piece of pottery foam like you would get at the women's craft store.
Then use a jig saw with a carbide bit like the ones shown below.

Cut the part just slightly oversized.

Then come back with a sanding longblock and 120 grit paper.

Be sure to use a respirator and shop vac to suck up the dust.
Wood working clamps works nice. The foam is used to support the carbon while being a sacrificial material for the blade to travel in and out of.

If they're line cuts, then use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge ,make several deep score marks (on BOTH sides) of the carbon plate and then lay it against a table's edge for guide and give it a good snap along those lines.
Make any additional cuts if necessary.

Thanks. Makes sense to me

I'm curious.. how are you using the carbon plate?
Do you mean the frame of your 3D printer or actually the print plate??

No, not the chassis. A build plate. Why do you ask?

That's Not cheap to use a 3mm carbon fiber plate for that purpose..
A simple carborundum glass plate or even a PEI spring steel sheet would give you better results for less $$$

Yep, I’m aware as I have tried both. I’m experimenting😁

What temp does the resin in CF sheets melt?
If you were buying it from a dedicated shop that makes and sells CF plate you could ask them.... Otherwise with all this low cost junk from China online, the best we have is ballpark guesses as each resin is a little different.

The general stuff is said to handle 150-300 F. while the high temp resins are good up to 600 F.

Bold.
I can definitely respect the desire to experiment.

Keep us in the loop.
