Just fitted a new input gear , is it better on the plastic to have the mesh tighter than you would on say a metal diff

Should be about the same, too tight and you'll over-stress the bearings, create friction and risk overheating

You want it snug, but not binding. If it’s smooth most of the way but gets a little notchy in one section, that’s fine. That little bit will wear in and be smooth after a pack.
