Arrma RC's
  1. Nero
So bought a Nero. It was buggered. Bought some spares

Then some more spares.

Then found an XL chassis with a body....

Then some hot racing parts.

Then someone said lots of parts were.unavailable- and I love a challenge

And now I'm building a brand xl Nero from new parts.....

Major win of the week was buying three brand new servos and finding a brand s0anking new diff brain in one of them.

Current plan is to go with a max6 4990 and an NB4 transmitter- i have a new tactic transmitter but they are very old tech.

Will be making a mould from the clean body so I can make carbon fibre kevlar indestructible body shell! Some piccies...

Some bits I don't like- arm options are rubbish, so I've gone with aluminium lowers and arrma uppers. Hopefully will give some control but also enough flex to reduce breakages.

Badass rig man. Keep us updated!

I'll be watching this build ,for sure.

Keep up the good work!

Who did you get the custom extended chassis plates from?
I didn't realize someone produced them..

Sorry only just saw this- I found a guy in the states who happened to have one set left! That was the last unfortunately. It adds about 10cm in length, and I've added some width with wider wheels and hexes, they've added 3cm each side. The whole thing is nowassive- I've just added a 4990sd max6 combo to give it some power!

If anyone's interested, I'll add some more photos too....

That's a Nice find/snatch then, for sure..
I've only ever seen custom one-offs of such extended chassis.

Yes!
Definitely keep us in the loop on your build.
We love photos. 👍

So a bit more done today, time to get the hubs right. The hot racing axle hubs are a work of art, and the hexes are beautifully made, but if you aren't using the hit racing drive parts the hexes need shimming. Also rather randomly the hexes have no way of capturing the drive pins, so I've thread locked them in, I might find some way of making a rubber gasket to hold them in. The wheels don't cover the pins.

I've also upgraded the proline wheels with Ali hubs.

Motor Time!

So what's the biggest motor that fits in a Nero chassis? The standard motor in a Nero chassis is the blx200 which is 42mm wide and 65mm. It's also a 2000kv motor.

Width wise a 46mm wide motor fits easily, so I've gone with a hobbywing 4990sd 1650kv naturally. It turns out that a 49mm wide motor fits very very tightly. So tightly in fact that it sits up against the chassis rails. I can confirm that it does fit and the length also works,

BUT it is incredibly tight, and actually the really tight spot is the drive member against the end of the motor. It has clearance but only 7 or 8mm (quarter inch in old money). You also need to clock the motor right over to get it to sit in the right place.

But yes a 4990 hobbywing motor will fit in an extended chassis, but nothing larger ( you could possibly fit a castle 1721 which is longer but narrower)

Oh two more things

if you are using the hot racing Ali differential covers for a nero...make sure you use the supplied plastic camlocms_ it's a right faff if you don't.

Also loving the carbon fibre slipper plates....

One of the problems with a lengthened chassis is that you need longer chassis protectors along the underside of the Nero. That's a problem because the holes don't quite line up for the bolts. The solution is to chop up another chassis piece being. Really careful with angles and how you make the cuts.

But

If you are careful you can make something that works pretty well.

This is NOT my forte, but I'm quietly pleased with this. The key thing is to rough up the surface of the plastic, give it a good clean, and then epoxy the parts separately and let them set. A fast setting epoxy is very helpful here.

Very nice work!

Or one could completely redesign (and produce) a custom bottom plate / chassis protector to match the extended chassis length..

Well now you say that, I'm planning on using the bit I built above as a basis for a mold to make a carbon fibre aramid part 😁
