You can use NiMh. Watch the cell count though. I think it needs either a 6 or 9 cell. And you have to change the settings on the esc.

BATTERY USAGE 6 to 8 Cell NiMh (7.2 to 9.6V). 2S to 3S LiPo (7.4 to 11.1V)

Being as the BLX100 is a rebranded Hobbywing Max10 of some sort, turning the LVC on and off should be pretty simple.
