So I've recently purchased a 4wd Granite and am very much interested in modifying this truck over time. Since i'm brand new to the hobby, I was hoping someone might take the time and lay out some things i can/should upgrade (and where to get them - Canadian suppliers are a plus!) to help with the mechanical aspects of the truck. Im not looking for speed right now, just increased piece of mind knowing whats on the inside (Diffs, Spur, Pinion, servo etc) will hold up over time and potentially be ready to receive a brushless increase to speed and performance when the time is right.

I've been pouring over Youtube and now these forums for something laid out a little more simply, but to be quite honest it can all be a little overwhelming to someone who has literally had their truck for 5 days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tl;dr

New truck owner would like as dummed downed a version as possible to make his new truck even better for the future!

Welcome to the forum! Lots of guys here have made brushed to brushless conversions with the Granite. I don't have experience with your truck but have heard mostly about outdrive replacements / upgrades. Quick search may be helpful. Outdrives are an easy change but I wouldn't exactly know which parts to suggest for you. Good luck!

Thanks for having me! I figured this was the best place to come for the info/support im looking for!

Who woulda thunk a forum is the answer in 2019

No problemo. There’s a lot of stuff out for these so you shouldn’t have any problems finding straight bolt on parts but try not to let it intimidate you. You can’t do anything to it that can’t be fixed one way or the other. Happy bashing and and happy RC’ing!

Welcome @Gnolam!

Rubber shielded bearings are a nice upgrade especially if you run in a dirty environment (all I really do). The rear diff input is a weak spot especially for those running brushless but there is a upgrade for it AR310773 . The stock esc and motor have given some problems with overheating. The specs on the stock servo are underwhelming but a ADS-15 from a kit breaker (like Jennys RC) can fix that for around $15 (more or less). Lipos are nice upgrade over nimh if you don't know about lipos good info here https://rogershobbycenter.com/lipoguide. Just starting out a decent charger that's 100 watt or more would be nice but I started with a Imax B6 which is fine for those just starting out IMHO. Whether you spend the money now for a decent charger or get one 100 watt or more and charges two batteries is up to you.

Let the fun begin bash, break, fix repeat hopefully not the breaking part too often though!

This is exactly the type of information i was looking for! Thank you, Cheapbastard! Do you think a heatsink for the motor would be a good idea? Any way to keep the esc cool?

1. Learn about LiPo storage voltage and the reasons for it.
2. Buy MIP wrenches.
3. Don't upgrade till it breaks. We have lots of fun with my son's brushed truck, speed and power isn't everything... (can't believe I said that)

Yes I do think a heatsink and/or fan will help it does for me on any motor brushed or brushless. How much of a difference just depends let's just say if I can fit one I would rather have a heatsink/fan than go without one. Brushed motors for the most part can't tolerate excessive heat for very long get a IR temp gun or pocket thermometer like the one I use https://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-pocket-thermometer-93983.html to keep a eye on temps of everything (esc/motor and even battery). Generally no more than 160F for the brushed motors I push to 180F on brushless motors but of course the cooler the better. Worry about keeping the motor cool first then try putting a fan on the esc. I will tell you right now I don't like running brushed motors too often brushless is just so much better. When your ready for brushless don't think it's necessarily this sudden burst of uncontrollable speed and power that all depends on the size and kv of the motor. You can get a slower brushless motor equivalent to a brushed motor.

I know I'm late here, but welcome.
hope you're enjoying the forum!

Welcome to the forum @Gnolam! As far as Canadian suppliers go, I guess it depends on where you are. Here in Toronto, we have a few good sized stores, that all have websites you can order from. https://hobbyhobby.com/store/, https://www.bigboyswithcooltoys.ca/, and https://www.greathobbies.com/ just to name a few. There's so many more, but it depends on where you are. When looking to replace stock parts for any Arrma, https://jennysrc.com/search?type=product&q=Arrma or their ebay site, http://www.ebaystores.com/Jennys-RC...&_sid=124566615&_sop=10&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 is the right place to shop.
