Getting back into RC with my kids... after much review, the Arrma Granite Voltage seemed to be a great first step. We just got two of these, and the new ones come with the 6 cell NIMH 1800mah batteries (instead of just the two cells and grow from there).
They work well for about 15+ minutes (full charge), then the throttle goes out on them and the ESC blinks green. Seems to do it faster if we run over any grass. Is this the sign that the battery needs charged, or is there a defect? We tried to factory reset the ESC, either that or just turning the ESC off and on gets it back to working for a couple minutes, only to arrive in the same state... .no throttle, but the steering works.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you

I just got mine yesterday, runs about 30 secs then only steering works, have to turn everything on and off and then it works again for about 30 secs. Disappointed

I am still going to try calling support to see what they say. 217-398-0007

Make sure the esc jumper is set to NiMH or Li-On mode if you're using the stock battery it came with. If the jumper is LiPo mode it will shut off if you're using the stock battery because detected voltage is too low.

Set to NiMH
What voltage are your battery cells at?
7.2 volts

Oops I forgot to tag @Flamemasterg, my reply was for him who said he gets just 30 seconds of run time before it shuts off.

@Dink20 The behavior you're getting (15 mins run time avg, less than that if on grass) is normal for the stock 1800mah batteries NiMH batteries. When the batteries drop to a certain voltage threshold the throttle is supposed to get slow then cut out to prevent you from completely draining the battery, rechargeables need some leftover juice to recharge and not go bad. If you want longer run times then going to a 2s Lipo with 5000mah capacity will give you about double the run time you're getting now.

mine was a bad speed controller, after a week finally got in touch with someone and they sent a new esc which fixed it

That’s not the cell voltages. That’s what the sticker says. You need to know what each cell voltage is.

It's a NiMH battery and does not have a balance lead. 15 minutes is normal for an 1800 mAh pack - actually its longer than I would expect. I recommend a decent charger. A good start is something like the Dynamite. Any of these will charge your current packs as well as balance charge properly as you move up to LiPo. I wish I had gone with a dual from the start given that I have kids that run them too. Either way I suggest a charger that can display per cell voltage and has a variety of programs and flexibility. I have the Hitech RDX Pro that I got a deal on at my LHS and it serves me very well.

Damn was I drunk that day?

For all you who recently acquired one for Christmas, just wanted to "bump" this thread.

I've come from having Traxxas vehicles and pulled the trigger for my son for this car. Ran it great without issues the first time. Second time out we were having this ESC issue.

From what I knew coming from Traxxas I would just see slow down in my vehicle and knew it was time to change the battery. Not the case for these ESC.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Hey guys hope this is still active. I just opened two for the kids for Christmas. Put the battery to charge till the LED on the charger was green. It ran for 10 seconds and it stopped running. Stealing works fine but doesn’t accelerate. The little light next to the on and off button is flashing green. Any idea or any advise to try and get it running while horizon hobby is closed?

Which cars did you get?
Also, check that the throttle trim is dead neutral. Then try the other battery.

Assuming from your description you are running a Granite Voltage that comes with the 1800mAh battery and wall wart with an LED.

The first thing I would check is the jumper on the red ESC. Your ESC can handle NiMH Batteries (which is what it came with) or 2S LIPO's (optional). If its jumpered to Lipo this could be the reason.

Other reasons: The included battery is not taking a charge, the wall charger is not fully charging, or the ESC is malfunctioning in the car.

We have several of these rigs in the fam, the wall chargers do not fully charge the battery after the LED turns green in our experience. I did a test once and I think the wall charger only charged our batteries to 60-70%.. Usual playtime with the stock battery.. Maybe 10minutes. We upgraded shortly after.
