for bashing on 3s, doess one need to install the speed spur and pinion that was included in the kit?

If by "bashing" you mean speed runs on-road, then yes. If by "bashing" you mean running off road then NO. Follow the manual and do NOT run the speed gears off-road. You're only to to burn things up and/or break stuff.
