SLR300 uses the SLT protocol the SR315 uses DSM2. Ie you cannot use the SLR300 with a Spektrum DX5C but you can use the SR315 with it.
If I understand you correctly, the SLR315 provides the same experience as the SLR300 on SLT3 transmitter, but it is also capable of supporting upgrades transmitters.

Did I get that right?

I thought just the transmitter was dual?

Specs of the SR315 says this

Modulation: DSMR/DSM2

the latest firmware update added SLT protocol support to the receiver

SR315 ships with the V5 Kraton and some other of the newer rigs. A big selling point on the box was that it works with DSMR too, since the V5 K6S ships with an SLT3 transmitter.

Idk why but I thought the transmitter was dual protocol.

Strange that Spektrum doesn't list the SR315 as being dual protocol on the product page.
