Thought I should start a build thread on my typhon v2. Now my new v5 kraton will be my primary off road basher I will be keeping the typhon on the black stuff and work it up to a speed run car.

I picked it up a couple of years ago as a *very* well used v2 that had been used for drag with a huge pinion and locked central spur.

Fast forward and after a full rebuild I have ran my first two packs through it without it breaking or constant thermal cutout.

Mods off the top of my head so far

*v5 spectrum electrics
*HR central spool
*motor cooling fans
*metal braces
*rebuilt, smimmed and tuned diffs 60/locked/40
*25kg servo
*hr servo bracket
*hr servo arm
*fast Eddie's bearings throughout
*19t pinion with bigger up my sleeve
*hr suspension mounts
*tbone front and rear bumpers

*tires tires tires... on going

I've tried not to just throw as much metal at it as possible because a) it costs a lot b) it adds weight c) i.will probably grenade it off a tree or similar anyway

So this is the start of my quest for triple digits and starting a thread might give me the motivation i need. lets see what happens...

Did some more tinkering. So the front bumper is flat for aero. I also added a wheelie bar to negate catastrophic nose lift. Not sure if it will add too much drag.

Also I installed the 27t pinion to the 42t spur and locker.

This is sat on s3 grps now for some shakedown testing. Plenty of straight roads here but mad camber for the rain here in Florida.

Done some tweaks to the geometry too but that is far from complete. I'm going to tune that as I go on.

Also raised the fans for cooling to the motor..not sure how temps will be with this gearing

First run on high gearing went great. Found an airfield and let her rip. The cable tied front wing separated without causing damage when it went grass cutting but no damage.

Medium/ soft compound worked well too. Plenty of down force and grip on the throttle

wish i could upload video

The front “wing” is pretty dope.

@mr_nom_noms_ having "been there & done it" I want to warn you about your HR centre spool before you have the same problem with it I had as well as some other speed runners.

You have the older design version with that crappy o-ring that holds the pin in. You can already see it almost failing in one of your pictures...
20210402_232238.jpg

Basically if that o-ring fails and you lose your drive cup retaining pin (like I did before) you will end up only having 2WD via the rear wheels & also only rear wheel braking. Essentially meaning when you go to brake it will be like pulling up a handbrake and you'll lose control.

The work around me and @cootertwo came up with was to either find a correct size bearing to cover the pin like he did or like I did was cut some aluminium tube to cover it. Pictures below to help you understand the fix.

If you're interested and have time take a look at my Typhon speed runner build thread as you might find some other bits that'll help you out hopefully.

Good luck with your build and speed goals.

First time I lost the pin the car pitched hard into a curb at maybe 70-80mph under braking. Luckily the damage wasn't too bad.

You're welcome. :)(y)
If you ever need any help just ask, ...plenty of us love speed running and are happy to help.

Have a look at the newly formed forum Typhon speed list here; https://www.arrmaforum.com/threads/speed-run-list-personal-bests-of-the-forum.35486/

Thanks this is very interesting. I think once I record 100+ I might turn it back to a basher but who knows. Might keep chasing speed 🤩

Had a fairly major rebuild since I tried running it without the front wing and its wiped out. I lost my front O/S suspension spring cup/ seat and bust a lower arm so I replaced that and rebuilt all four shocks with 50wt oil. I also changed fr and rr diff oil for 200,000 and added some.spicy gearing (pinion 35t and spur 38t) so not far from 1:1 gearing. Shaved the pin and added heat shrink tune to the spur to save the pin. @GMballistic gave me this tip

My locker was frozen so tore it down at great.frustration and.added the sealed bearings.

Now for a good alignment and geo before a few passes.

On paper she will be good for over 100 mph but let's see.

Details and a straight running car is where I need to be focusing on now...

First shakedown geared up tonight on asphalt. Like the way it ran straight but seriously short on space had a BIG tumble on the runoff but its grass so no damage.

Recorded speed was 77.9 mph on my garmin 4runner.

Not bad but I need to find a bigger piece of road now.

Played again with geometry and the esc settings. Brakes were on setting two. Doh! No wonder no brakes... punch changed from 4 to 7.

Hopefully get a few runs in tonight, found a new spot but its tight (thats what she said)
