How tight do you shim your diffs?

When I shim one of my diffs I can either use one shim less than in Thomas P:s fantastic video about bulletproof diffs making it feel smooth like butter when turning the outdrives (is that the correct term?), OR I can use the exact same amount as Thomas, and I will feel a soft clicking as the gears turn into each other.

There’s no ‘binding’ if that means that the mesh is so tight that it jams, it’s just that I feel the gears turning.

Thanks,
Joel

I prefer them to operate smoothly. Any time you feel them getting rough they are actually starting to bind. Better a fuzz loose than a fuzz tight. Everything in there expands with heat also, which will tighten them up. I always shim equally. The heavy lube takes up a little of the clearance too.

*Also worth noting
there's a noticeable difference in notchiness when shimming a gear set that's been broken in with 2 or 3 packs, run time vs a brand new gear set with zero run time, so take that into consideration as well.

Great to know!
Thanks for the info - will make sure not to overdo it :)
