Did you drill out the hole first? @Jimbobjr mentioned to do that first. I used my caliper to measure the shaft of the t-nut, and went a hair larger.
Yeah, I did. I could push the center bit into the hole with my thumb, but the 4 spikes wouldn't embed very well without heat.
 
Strange...?

Did you make sure the spike bits were only going through the thin part of the tray, not hitting a thick part or something...??

I did just what everyone else did used a longer screw to make the pilot hole, and then held the T nut with plyers and screw baby screw till the teeth in the t nut in bedded themselves into the tray and then replaced longer screw with the original 5mm and a drop of blue threadlock ??

Maybe it was partly because I was putting the screws/nuts on with the tray completely off the truck. Not sure. Either way, the soldering iron made short work of it.
