What does the Gyro in the receiver actually do and do standard Arrma / Spektrum ones have that?

The gyro helps keep the car straight under power by automatically steering into a skid if there is no steering input applied (ie you are trying to drive straight!). AVC is more advanced than the function provided by the DumboRC gyro which is pretty basic.

The Spektrum AVC is not standard in the granite. You would need to upgrade both the tx and rx to have AVC. I use a dx3 and and sr6100 in my KEXB to have the AVC available if I want it.
