If you want a money suck that's worse than RC cars, welcome to photography.

But in all seriousness, have you taken any basic photography classes? Understanding aperture and shutter speed and how they interplay? Composition? etc. Photography has changed a lot since the days I was in the darkroom and computational photography is bringing a whole new dimension to the field. The key is practice, practice, practice and find things you like to photograph and do it often.

Nice shots @Engineer it looks like we have several interests in common.
Photography is one of my other hobbies too. One tip I will give you is don't get wrapped up in buying tons of gear at first, learning your technique first is the best way to get good shots. And as engineer says, practice, the more you shoot the better you get.
A good forum to check out is Thephotoforum <<<LINK

Here are a few of my shots too.

Something I was always interested in, but with no experience and high end equipment it never happened, and as engineer said it's a money pit getting into it today.

1/3-2/3 composition

The most common mistake for beginner photographers is bad composition. Try to not center your subject.

I personally think these are fantastic, very painterly. The colors and overall feel reminds me of French Impressionism.

I too like photography. I’m no expert by any means but here are some i shot with my phone and edited. Yup, I’m that guy that enjoys sunsets and sunrises.

Oh Golden Hour, how I love thee.

nice - along with framing, I would also say to OP to watch the horizon as there is a little bit of tilt in that shot - but nothing that can't be fixed in post.
