Mine is from the pre digital days. Mine is the 888 without a D. Mine has a pot dial. ??‍♂️
I like the dial setting better with digital readout, set it and use it... The Hakko would be like resetting an alarm clock everytime you use it. Reviews state it's not user friendly and difficult to program. Can't find the solid whit face Trakpower units anymore. Their solid units but no DRO. I think Xtronic is the way to go... Solid units from 30-80 buck range with a 3 year parts and labor guarantee.

Hakko FX-888D is my go to for anything RC

I had a 70W pistol type iron like that, it was fine for big stuff like power/battery leads, but you have to use the trigger wisely to keep the temperature usable. Hold it for a bit too long and it overheats (burning the flux and possibly overheating the thing you're trying to solder). But with a little care it worked fine.

Check out the xtronic 4010 on Amazon. There’s a 20 percent off coupon and free delivery. Makes it around $74.00 w/tax

It’s not a station but it seems adequate. Home Depot $40

Don't use a soldering GUN on electronic stuff. Please! The tip is actually the secondary of a transformer, and can have weird voltages on it.

Get an iron, like a 40 Watt Weller.

I've always been partial to Weller. Excellent products, and great support. Hakko is good, too.
