so when i change out my engine yesterday to a fireball from hpi, my buddy that gave it to me also gave me a 23 gear, It seems to be running great, smooth quick take off. Is there any consequences for upgrading only that gear?

Keep an eye on your temps. So long as the motor isn't getting to hot then you will be fine.

wouldnt a 23 pinion make the motor not run as hot? I thought I had read that somewhere.

Generally, higher tooth pinion gear or lower tooth spur gear means more heat. Lower tooth pinion gear or higher tooth spur gear means less heat.

There are a few cases, very rare, when too small of a pinion gear can cause a hot motor also, but this would be in extremely under geared situations.
