Hi I'm trying to get my arrma talion close to 100 mph. would anybody be interested in sharing their setup with me as far as gearing and if you're using a spool. The guys getting serious speed always keep it secret and I understand it takes a lot of trial and error but I'm not trying to waste a bunch of money I would like to order the right gears the first time to at least get a start any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I don't have a talion, but in my typhon I hit 102mph today on 6s using 30t pinion and 34t spur. I'm using the hot racing spool to use this gear setup. Talion is wider and heavier so it will probably need above 2000kv motor and a better esc to break 100mph. The castle mamba xlx is a popular esc for speed runs. Hope that helps. Some keep things secret because they're breaking records or trying to hold onto them so you can't really blame them although I've found all are happy to help where they can with others set ups. ;)

My thread has been kindly linked above by @Erstadw and although it is for a Typhon I haven't hidden or kept anything secret so lots of ideas in it for others to try.

In short though for you to break over into triple digits you're definitely going to need a centre spool to run different spur gears. I use a Hot Racing centre spool which allows me to run Traxxas, Hot Racing and other spur gears along with higher pinion gears.
You're also going to want to get some decent tyres on it like GRP's which tbh are the only ones from experience I can recommend. BSR foams are another option but I've not tried those yet.

get a spool, gearing depends on what motor and esc you are using. talion has lower gearing than a Typhon so keep that in mind also. and if using smaller tires aswell.

Noob question here, but what is a spool? I’m not even close to this level, but just am curious.

Thanks I really appreciate that info oh, I'm going to buy the 34t hot racing spur gear

I really appreciate that info. I'm going to go with the 34t hot racing spur gear but may I ask what brand pinion you have? The hot racing spur is mod 1 and alot of the 30t pinions I'm finding are 48 pitch. I'm new to this but I belive 48 pitch and mod 1 are diffrent? Thanks again

Your correct, mod1 and 48 pitch are different. I'm using a 30t mod1 tekno pinion. I also have a 34t traxxas mod1 pinion. I have seen tekno pinions up to 30t and robinson racing up to 27t. Robinson racing and tekno seem to be the most popular.

For 100mph Id recommend something close to 1:1 (29/34 30/34 32/34 etc) see where that takes you. If this is new to you, expect some serious motor temps after just 1 or 2 passes and cogging at start up/low speeds.

If you want to get the gearing right the first go around, check out a speed calculator like the bolo. You will want to over compensate by some margin because they do not account for friction, wind resistance, or electrical efficiencies (around 90%).

I happened to just order a spool setup this past weekend and a set of GRP S3 tires.
FYI when searching for the Traxxas Spur gears I typically search "Revo mod 1 spur" on eBay.

I wanted to be able to swap between the original center diff for bashing and the spool for speed runs so I also picked up the extra parts required. This shopping list may help others out there (I have a Kraton so double check what outdrives and pins you need):

Thanks so much for all your help, I appreciate it more than you know! Hopefully this will be my last question but are you running the stock arrma motor mount? I have a V3 talion but I put the V4 sliding motor mount in from what I've read it will accommodate this gearing but want to make sure. Also I'm assuming your running aftermarket electronics then? That will be my next purchase.

I use the hot racing motor mount. Electronics I'm using a mamba xlx esc and a tppower 4060 1950kv motor. I really like them. I think I can get close to 115mph with that motor. To go faster I probably get a higher kv motor in a few months.

From my limited experience with the TP Power motors, and you having the XLX ESC, I think you could gear that motor to do just about anything you want. They have TONS of torque, especially if you have the ESC and battery to feed them properly.:)
