If you're concerned about the accuracy, maybe test it using something like boiling water with another thermometer to see what it shows.

Never thought about boiling water as a known temp ?‍♂️Great idea THANKS

I'm curious how accurate that circle is at a certain distance. Since it's IR, a camera (read phone) should show it. Not sure how bright it'll be but maybe it's possible to see the size of the circle. Was thinking it might work since a TV remote uses IR and I use my phone to see if it's still emitting. Easier and faster than taking the batteries out and checking them with my multimeter.

With those wide beam, gun types, check the instructions. They normally have a "MAX" setting where they will show the max temp / hot spot from the entire area of the scan. This is how my Home Depot meter works.
