Arrma RC's
  1. 4x4-Mega
  2. Kraton EXB
Planning on buying some tires for my son's Granite 4x4. It is the MEGA brushed version, and we have upgraded to a brushless motor. Our main uses are off-road (grass / gravel / dirt), and not a lot of jumping (if any... yet). This is NOT a skate park rig! Anyway wanting to get some wheels / tires, and looking for belted!

I have "in cart" the following to convert to 17mm:
ARA310905
ARA310904
(EDIT: The video I am seeing this conversion on is:
)

I would like to get two sets of tires.
1. For the grass / grave / dirt that we typically do.
2. For asphalt / concrete just for some speed fun.

The stock tires that are on there are about worn, and balloon so bad I am sure they will blow soon. What tires do y'all suggest if I am going to order two types?

For the 17mm conversion, you'll also need these:

The best way to get them is at Jenny's RC. This comes with the hexes, nuts, pins and screws altogether for much less than buying separately.

For the axles. Jenny's sells them with the driveshafts. Buying the axles alone will be less expensive. But driveshafts are a frequently replaced item. Jenny's price for 4 driveshafts and 4 axles is almost half as buying the same from Horizon. I think it's worth it to get the axles and keep the driveshafts for spare parts.

I'd suggest something belted, but people mention that the belted ones also can break down. Using thicker differential fluid can help your tires not balloon as much, as it will more evenly distribute RPMs between the two wheels. Stock is 15k weight fluid. You can also put a smaller pinion (15T?) on the motor (increase torque, decrease rpm's), but that might not make it as fun to play.

As for 17mm tires for the Granite. I've used the Proline MX28's and Trenchers.

The MX28s have lots of traction and are amazing in dirt. However, in thicker grass and other high traction situations, that traction will result in more traction roll.

The Trenchers are a little more durable, but have less traction. In poor traction situations, like dirt or wet grass, the Trenchers can slide around a lot. But in high traction situations, like dry grass and pavement, more sideways slide can be a good thing and the Trenchers perform well.

For dirt/gravel, I wholeheartedly recommend the MX28's. The Trenchers are more of an all-round tire than a pure asphalt/concrete tire, so there may be better options that I haven't tried. But they do work well on concrete/asphalt. It's exactly how I use my MX28's (dirt, grass) and Trenchers (pavement).

I'm not a speed runner, so I've never needed belted tires. But I know the added weight does have downsides. They will heat up electronics faster and they will pop driveshafts more easily.

^^^^ @GRC said it well.

I use both as well MX Badlands and the Trenchers non-belted for both. For me Trenchers are for patchy grass/dirt, etc I do not want deep grip I want to be able to slip and drift and not traction roll turning when turning on that terrian.

Very loose dirt etc where I need traction I go with the MX Badlands as GRC said. No speed runs or no hard surface for me.

Great combination between the two...

It sounds like lots of suggestions on the MX28s, which are not belted... CORRECT???? The stock tires he has on there balloon so much, I thought belted would be the way to go.

My recommendation is for non-belted. I have tried belted in different Proline tires and then I sold them here. I keep coming back to the non-belted in the same tire. The issue has always been belted tires for me on 3S all I run makes the electronics run so much hotter. It already runs hot on norm without good cooling but even at my good cooling belted works the rig temps.

Staying with the non-belted PL MX Badlands and Trenchers. Venting does help you still will get some ballooning but it is far less than the stock Arrma tires.
