You do realize that WD40 is water based right? WD40 can cause other problems due to this, plus it will actually dry up. I use PB Blaster, it's a penetrating lube and prevents rust. Works great for all metal moving parts and joints. Plus it will free up stuck bearings if you soak them in it. Just my opinion though and it works for me.
PB Blaster might work to well on some of those plastics. I love the stuff but it shows melting styrofoam cups right on the can. Do you think it can have any effects on the plastic over steady use?

You stupid fiddlestick, WD40 does not contain water.
