Hi everyone,

Have a few noob questions. Hope y'all don't mind.

What is discharge rate? What does discharging a battery do? Is it required to discharge a 2s LiPo battery? If a battery has 80C is that good or bad?

Regards

When you power ie, a motor, servo, lightbulb or indeed any load with a lipo... you are discharging.

Discharge rate is how fast you are discharging or also how many Amps a battery can discharge at/supply safely.

"C Rating is an indicator of the continuous discharge rate of a LiPo. It allows users to easily calculate the maximum constant current you can draw from the LiPo pack safely without harming the battery. For example, if you have a 3S 1000mah 20C LiPo pack, your safe max current draw would be 1000ma x 20C = 20A."

80C discharge rating would be exceptional if genuine but the reality is that the real figure wont be anywhere near that... as pretty much all the Lipo manufacturers make false claims/exaggerate.

Currently... the highest C performance Lipos measured are reckoned to be the Turnigy Graphene Panther range.

Ari33's explanation above is perfect. As he mentioned the math no longer works because manufacturers are allowed to put any number on their products. Despite all sorts of C-ratings the highest we have seen in real tests is 55C.

With that said if a manufacturer sells a 30c and an 80C LiPo, buy the 80C because the real numbers are likely 15c and 40C

Another thing to note on this is that capacity helps in Amp output. I generally stick with 5000 mAh or higher.
