battery after 20 minutes

battery after 20 minutes charge
was using a Radient Duplex11 charger, battery popped and was hissing after about 20 mins, just managed to get it outside on the ground, within seconds it through out thick black smoke then burst into flames, it was all over in about 2 minutes

unfortunately not, ive got a 5000mah, 11.1v 6s. was charging it at 2.0a, 22.2v 4s. complete and utter butt crack

You're mixing up some numbers here. If your battery is 11.1V then it's 3s. If you were charging for 22.2V that would be for a 6s battery, not 4s. The 2.0A is on the low side, you can safely charge most LiPo's at 1C, which would be 5.0A for this 5000mAh battery.

I'm surprised your charger allows you to set the voltage too high. I don't have any experience with any decent chargers yet (though an ISDT Q6 is on its way) but I imagine a charger like the Radient Duplex II would detect the number of cells trough the amount of connected balance leads? Am I wrong?

Anyway, consider yourself very lucky! You didn't lose your house and gained important battery safety experience...

Yes like L0stB1t above said, I think you are a little confused with some numbers. I guess you where charging a 3S battery on a 6S programm. But charging a 5000mah battery on 2.0A is actually very safe, because it is on the low side like mentioned before. Normally you can charge a lipo battery a 1C so a 5000mah battery can be charged with 5.0A. I don't know what happened exactly because normally a good lipo charger doesn't allow you to charge a battery with the wrong setting. When I accidentally setup my charger the wrong way, it will let me know something is wrong. For instance when I try to charge a 2S lipo on a 3S lipo setting. It will tell me the voltage is too low or the cell number is not correct. Make sure to invest in a good charger that will help you with some warnings when something's up. Even the cheap ones have these warnings, so I really don't know what went wrong in your case. Maybe you accidentally charges the lipo on a Nihm program and you didn't realise it? It must be something like that. I all the years I charged lipo batteries (from new ones to old and a little bit puffed ones) I never had a battery go up in flames during charging. Especially if you don't go over 1C charging current you should be fine.
