What about a motor upgrade ? I have often wondered can it be upgraded without to much hassel and staying on 3s.?

Oof, yea either that motor is bad or your ESC. I would check the receiver too but that's probably a low chance.

The spur gear came as a 1 x piece presumably with bearing etc already inside..

No, not the tiny bearing inside the assembly. There is a main bearing on the outside of both ends of the spur gear. Those good?
