Update… Got a new esc today and installed it. Ran 2 packs through it with no issues. Wonder if the guy I bought it from knew about the issue and was just hoping I didn’t test run it long.

Either way, this thing will be perfect for my son!

Most likely he knew it was bad. You and you Son are going to have lots of great memories with his first rc!!
Get yourself a replacement motor,can't see that lasting to long.

Yeah with Brushed motors, good to have a spare on hand. The brushes simply wear out. Its a thing. Cheap enough. Like stated earlier keep them cleaned out with electrical spray and lubed. You will get the longest use out of them.
