So I got home from work today and decided to pull the Turnigy 80amp ESC & 3520kv motor (WP, for 1/10) out of my Slash (2wd) and give it a whirl in the Mega Granite...

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-trackstar-waterproof-1-10-brushless-power-system-3520kv-80a.html

Overall I'm very pleased with this system (in the Slash). The temp stays reasonable, the power is just a bit better than the Velineon system I replaced with it, and it was inexpensive. I like it enough that I was considering buying a second kit and putting it in the Granite, but figured it would be prudent to try it first, so that's what I did today. One unexpected thing I felt necessary was to oblong the lower motor mount hole (just a little with a small, round file), as the gear mesh was just too tight for my liking. Ok, no biggie. I got everything mounted and synced-up the radio, and out to the street we went. I was running the Banditos on it because I was planning some speed runs in the street, and hate murdering those stock off-roaders. I also wanted to be able to comment on whether or not the Banditos ballooned much (they did not, but it's a fairly mild system). Lastly I decided to run the 14 tooth sprocket (good thing!). Speed and power was improved enough that I had to tighten the slipper a lot to keep it from getting smoked. If I hit a bump and throttled up just right, I got a satisfying wheelie outta the little guy. All was looking good, until I checked the heat. The ESC was hovering around 115 degrees F, which is ok (mix of high speed runs on street and some grass bashing), but the motor temp got up to just about 180, which is too hot. I know, maybe 180 could be considered right on the line (by some), but I'm running the SMALLEST PINION! This means (to me) that there is zero wiggle room with gearing. If I want more speed, I can't gear up for it without risking an overheat, which seems assured.

So it seems I need to step up the system I put in this truck. I'm guessing my Turnigy system is just a bit underpowered for this little 4x4? I'm not going to need a 1/8 scale system, am I?

In some cases, it could be that your running peak rpm's too much causing the motor to overheat. Might want to try a 15T pinion to see the effect it has.

I felt that in my (slash) 4wd 10th scale 3500kv was kind of high unless i was at the track and i only practice. And i used the stock and also a hobbywing 120a and a Tenshock 401 and 3400 was fast and cooler than stock. I would suggest a 2400kv Castle and 3s but im on the overkill all side.

I feel a 3000 or lower is what i wanted if i stayed with a tenth scale can. I liked my 2200 with a 20 tooth pinion on 2s....

I guess its preference. To keep as cool as i like i run big cans in all but my B5M

Huh, thanks for the suggestions! I considered trying a larger pinion, but i just figured bigger pinion equals higher temp. I should have done that, but I already put the Turnigy back in the Slash and the brushed system back in the Granite. I don't mind the brushed system AT ALL, I just don't like all the heat cutting into my run time (darn that thermal shut-down!). I have another Turnigy ESC that is 100amps and sensored capable, and I have a motor that is a 21.5 turn sensored (something like 1900kv? Was going to put it in a crawler, then decided to stay brushed), but the ESC does not even claim to be water proof, hence my hesitation. Maybe I'll try that with a 27 tooth pinion (or is the biggest intended pinion 25? Don't remember...). I'd like to avoid 3S (for now), as well as installing some psycho-1/8 scale monstrosity, at least until the upgrade parts become available (or I break my first input gear and do "the fix"). In the end, I just don't "need" 3S and up, 1/8 scale power from this little guy (tho I DO need it from my EMaxx...keeping my eyes peeled).

In my Senton Mega, I run 2S on a 3900KV, 60A ESC with a 22t pinion. I have dozens of packs through it. It gets pretty darn warm, but it's like the Energizer Bunny ... it keeps going and going and going ....

Second experiment with brushless: FAIL! Hooked up my 100amp Sensored Turnigy ESC and a Turnigy sensored 21.5t motor. Darned motor was acting weird, like it was cogging and then released the magic smoke! I had this motor/ESC combo in my EMaxx about a month ago, and it was fine (if a little slow). Somehow sitting in the box for a month killed my motor? Sigh....back to brushed, again. Gonna try the 17t pinion. In the meantime I'll be surfing the internetz for another brushless combo for this truck.

Well I finally ordered a new brushless system for the Granite. I went with the Hobby Wing Max10SCT/3660 combo in 3200kv, and a program card. We'll see how it goes in 4 to 10 days! Hopefully I can source a pinion or two locally before then...(5mm shaft).

I'm running the castle 1410 brushless motor with the sidewinder 4 and a 27 tooth pinion. Very fast lots of wheelies.

If you local shops don't have 5mm 48p pinions, Amain has the Robinson Racing pinions.

Following. Whatever you come up with that works - is it okay if I copy it? Thank you.

Thanks Jerry!

Stack15: follow me, I'll show you where to crash...

That said, I have something to report: my Hobbywing system arrived today....WOW....just WOW!
Review to follow....

I see you changed the esc and the motor. Did you do anything else at this point?

Not really, at least not to the power train. I did do a “steering fix” that cleaned up a lot of the slop/play in the stock steering. I’m planning on waiting for breakage/failure or new “improved” parts availability to do any other modding.

How is the experiment going? I saw the press release for the granite 4x4 BLX.

It’s using a 3200Kv 4 pole motor and a 100A ESC.

Stock pinion? Nope, I'm using a 16 tooth pinion, stock spur. It is a little faster than it was brushed with the 17 tooth pinion on 2S. Temps are well within the "safe zone," even though I primarily run the Granite on the grass in my back yard. The 3200kv motor has been absolutely perfect, I think. Arrma must be watching.....

Thank you. I have been meaning to set aside a few hours to read online about gears, ratios and such. It’s confusing but also seems fascinating.

I am running 21mph on my granite 4x4s with stock and a 2S LiPo Battery. I would like to get that up to 30mph for straight line pickup speed.

As far as the pinion would this work?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/391837314760

I saw that other thread with a 32p mod but I don’t think I am ready for that yet. Do you know what top speed you are getting?

Thoughts on this pinion? They don’t seem to make a 16T one. I read through this whole post again twice. I gather that a 5mm 48p pinion fits the granite mega 4x4.

Now how did you figure that out? I looked up the part number from the exploded view PDF. It’s AR310381. It’s a 14T 48dp pinion. Without this thread I would have had to uninstall and measure it to find the 5mm part. Thank you.
